My new (1yr 2 months) HP pavilion zx5078cl notebook power pin from the AC adapter broke just after the manuafcturers warranty expired -- had an extended ---- as its a minimu $225 plus shipping to have the repair depot look at it, and I imagine their will be parts costs and probably some more labor if they have to replace the motherbaord (unsure if it is soidered to the motherboard or just a connector -- being the main power -- it is probably soidered). So, probably a $500 repair minimum.

The thing is, the power pin had NO strain or stress on it really as it sat at the same table and was rarely moved -- if thats enough to yank it off the motherboard, they are going to have HUNDREDS of pavilion zx5000 series notebook computers coming in for repair -- its not from stress, probably faulty soildering! Better have the extra warranty as ONE breakdown covers the cost of it --- so your even with just ONE repair (as mine cost $194 for 3 extra years)

Mine had the same thing, the no stress part- the first time I sent it in they did nothing to it, the second time they said they fixed it... I took it out of the wrapper and it didnt work and the third time they say they replaced the motherboard. Oh- this leads me to a very interesting question... why is there a toshiba motherboard in my computer?

i had the same problem with my zx5000 (ive had it for almost 2 years), im not exactly sure when this happend, but at some time, my power chord got bent, and i think it damaged the pin.
it still works, AS LONG as i have the power chord plugged in.
it does not even read the battery.

"if thats enough to yank it off the motherboard, they are going to have HUNDREDS of pavilion zx5000 series notebook computers coming in for repair"

Apparently they do, for the same reason from what I've read...

Same problem here, no stress on it whatsoever, suddenly became more & more temperamental in recognizing the AC adapter, charging the battery, etc. Oddly enough, it recognizes the AC adapter much more easily when it's turned off - but when plugged in it is hard to get it to run on AC power because it doesn't think the AC is plugged in. HP said that a pin inside the AC Jack was probably broken. I am afraid of sending it in to HP because of my last experience with them (heatsink fan stopped working, sent it in, got it back unrepaired, after lots of drama.) I use it for work and have a presentation coming up in 2 days. I've listed it with HP as being for "home office" since I use it for both. Still, they say I need to send it to their CA repair center to be fixed, it will take 1-2 wks. Plus, I don't really like shipping it away and risking it getting jostled around. That can't be good for it.

Strangely enough these problems only began after I got it back from HP repair center the last time.

Is there a way to fix this quickly, inexpensively and reliably?

    Thx

AnnChar28, your problem sounds exactly like the prblem I'm having with my zv5000. I've had it a little over a year and now, my computer starts up fine on AC power, but shortly after that, it will switch to battery power, thenI hvae to unplug the AC cable and plug it back in so my computer will recognize, then it lasts sometimes a few seconds or sometimes a couple hours until it switches back to battery power.

This is a really annoying issue, and it baffles me as to what exactly the problem is.

Also, my battery meter says it is cahrged to 100%, but if I use it on battery power for about five minutes, my computer shuts down because tha battery is dead. I have the 12 cell battery and I already checked to see if it was part of the recall... it's not.

Any help from anyone would be appreciated here. Are these really the symptoms of a loose solder joint? Beacause, when I wiggle the cable, it does not affect the connection at all.

I can offer no solutoin here, but echo the problem. I have a pavilion zx5000 (18 months old) with just this problem. Battery life is almost non-existent, and the ac charger is intermittently recognised. When the laptop show it's switched to battery power (icon in lower right of window, Win XP), I remove the ac plug and push it in again, and hey presto! it's back to chargin again. This sometimes works for a few seconds, and sometimes for much longer. Right now it's been charging for about 5 minutes, and I'm just so looking forward to finding out how long before it loses the connection again (not!).
If anyone can throw light on this, it'd be great. I have 3 years rtb warranty, looks like I'll have to go and lose my laptop for a week or two...

I have exactly the same symptoms and, I suppose, exactly the same problem. The external power cord is unreliable because of a short somewhere at the back of my HP pavilion zx5078cl. My notebook is out of warrantee, but I wouldn't mind receiving a free repair from HP as the result of a class action lawsuit. How many zx5000 series laptops are affected? I'm guessing quite a few.

Incidentally, this may be HP's way to generate some notebook expansion base sales. I have had no problems charging my battery or powering my notebook on the base.

I wish HP would learn that cheaper is not better. My AC adapter (power brick and cords) is poor quality, my battery loses life quicker than a mayfly, and the squeels, squeaks, and other sounds coming from my power subsystem are disappointing.

Otherwise, I am happy with my notebook...

    Jeremy
