I am trying to find a power adapter for my HP dock XB3000, however, everywhere I look, the power adapter seem to be the same. My laptop uses the newer smart pin connection, however the dock uses a smaller plug. When I look on ebay, I see they list practically all hp laptops to be compatable with their power adapters. I was just wondering if the power adapters are practically universal, other than the difference between the 65W and the 90W adapters.

The 65W and 90W adapters have different connectors.

I found this out when trying to use a 65W adapter on my laptop. Since my laptop has discreet graphics, it came with a 90W. So one day, my battery was low and I wanted to charge my battery using my friends power adapter (He had an HP too). He had the 65W adapter and I thought it would work, but the plug wouldn't fit. I took mines out and it fits like normal. My adapter fitted my friends laptop also.

So I guess the 65W must be smaller and the 90W adapter is a little bit larger since it fitted both our laptops.

Maybe the new smart pin connectors are different as well because right now, I have a HP quick dock and it accepts both 65W and 90W adapters. I think all the newer HP's come with the 90W smart pin adapters. The xb3000 was designed for the dv2000/6000/9000. The xb4 is designed for the current series dv4/5/6/7.

So, I guess it would be better to get the 90W adapter then?
