i have the power adaptor sitn like two feet from me,you know that big part that is like a small brick. well,i toucht it and its super hot. if you were to hold on to it for a couple of seconds id say youd get a burn, now ive felt the brick parts of electronic stuff before and i dont recall them every being this hot.

is this normal for it to be this hot. and i can smell the plastic lol.

I wonder if you would to put a heatsink on the ac adapter, that might help cool the adapter.

If you can 'smell' the heat it is probably getting too hot. I'd call HP and see about getting a replacement, as I'd rather see you be safe (replace) rather than sorry (flaming AC adapter).

My 90W adapter gets pretty warm but does not emit any smell. As Greg suggests, I would think about swapping it.............

I strongly agree with Greg; safety takes priority over doubt. Have it replaced.

Well I'd replace it because of the smell as well. I would like to add that at first my adapter would get extremely hot without any smell. It was hot enough that I would not use it plugged in except to charge up my laptop. Then after a couple charges it is much cooler. It's still warm, but not nearly as hot as it was. I now keep it plugged in the whole time without worrying about it getting too hot. Perhaps there's a break in time?

If its hot that it burns you.. get it replaced as soon as possible as it may explode and catch on fire like batterys when they are overcharged. if you still plan to use it, make sure your always around

The "brick" part of the powercord is a step down transformer which handles alot of electric current that causes heat.

my 90 watt brick on my HP 8510w get very hot when A I am charging that battery, or B doing that plus gaming. Other wise its very luke warm. But if you smell "burnt plastic", then something is wrong. :D

My 90W adapter for my nw8440 gets *very* hot when charging the battery and/or when the machine is under intense activity. It gets especially hot when it is doing both. If it's simply powering the notebook, under a light load, and not actually charging the battery, then it remains rather cool.

Could you tell us what notebook you have and the wattage of your AC adapter?

Well mine also gets very hot but there is no smell. I guss thats normal as long as it doesnt get very very hot and emits smell. In that case you should probably get it changed.

I thought power bricks do get scalding hot, but still touchable for 1 seconds.
Is it really possible to "smell" the heat, i mean, how does it smell like?

Like the new smell of plastic, but you can smell it from a distance and you can actually feel the heat without touching the adapter.
