This past Friday I began my quest for a new laptop. I quickly narrowed my choices down to the HP dv1000, ze2000 Compaq v2000, m2000, or Gateway M320x.
The pricing and additional battery of the dv1000 made it my first choice and so I set out to see a few of these in person. Unbeknownst to me the free battery option disappeared without warning, replaced with an additional $50 rebate/discount. Ok, not bad however, when now configuring the same machine now even with the additional $50 discount the price is $100 more?
So my question is, should I wait and hope for better discounts/pricing in the furture? I always thought PC pricing trended downward with few if any exceptions but the dv1000 has definitely just gone up in price and I don't want to wait only to see it go up again. I don't qualify for any student discounts or anything like that. Are these pricing changes typical of HP?
Thx,
JN

Hi JN99
I think the price fluctuates with demand and supply and the dollar rates.
If you like a deal, buy it.
Otherwise you will keep on waiting []

"Timing is everything" quoted from a Gateway representative when I tried to close a deal with them. To be honest, I have watched HPshopping for 4 weeks. They had the $50 instant and $50 mail in for 3 weeks on the HP DV1000, and $30 mail in and $50 instant on the Compaq V2000. To my dismay, one day after deciding on the Compaq, the price went up $50 and they took the instant discount away. The pricing doesn't fluctuate that often...must be every 3-4 weeks.
However, if you purchase with an American Express, Amex with refund the difference within 60 days of purchase (there has to be a price drop in that period). HPshopping refunds the difference but I don't know their time frame. Happy hunting....
I am typing on my DV1000 which I received yesterday. The brightview is NICE. It does run hotter than I expected so it is definitely not a "laptop" unless you want your gonads burned off....

It must work like the automatic buy/sell programmes of the stockbrokers in the NYC stock exchange.
If a certain number of suckers place a buy order ,
then there must be a secret programme which automatically drops the discounts/rebates.
Conversely , if in a 48 hour period ,a model does not register any buy orders, then discounts/rebates get slapped in.
Can some software geeks enlighten us please []

Well unlike Dell, HP certainly doesn't plaster "expries tomorrow", or whatever the case may be all over the site. As such they have probably lost at least one sale, mine. How was I to know the first day I started looking was the last day of the deal at the time? Maybe it said somewhere but I certianly don't see anything anywhere on their site.
I cannot see paying an extra $100 and not getting the free battery and also not getting the free printer. It's stupid to no inform the buying public.
Now I am leaning towards the Gateway m320x, which has a $100 rebate currently (which Gateway clearly states expires on 2/16 thank you very much). Apart from the widescreen, which I just don't get, it's vertical space I find at a premium, I can get most all the same features as the dv1000 for less. But then there's all the Gateway horror stories... []

Gateway was on the verge of folding up before it took over Emachines,to get a foothold with the large retail chains like BestBuy.
It might fold up again in the future,Computer industry being highly competitive.
Even IBM had to sell out to the Chinese []
