I downloaded the program "HW monitor" to monitor the temperature of various components. What are the normal ranges for CPU, video, and HD?

First,
You need to list your CPU and Graphics chip.
The answer will depends on it. -
- Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 (2.0GHz/4MB L2Cache)
- 319MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
- 80GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive -
Matrix,
I'm pretty sure you know that there is a issue with the 8400-series chips.
They overheat due to a design/manufacturing flaw.
I like to keep a Hard drive below 50 degrees...45 is nice for a max.
For the CPU above 75 is not comfortable, even tho Intel specs this T7300 for a max temp of 100 degrees celsius:

You GFX chip shouldn't go above 80 degrees celsius while in-game, even is nVidai states that it can go to 110 degrees C....
Read on you GFX chip, the issue is well documented and there might be lawsuits on the go for 8400m owners. -
Which is exaggerated by the poor thermal material and mounting of HP heatsinks. If the laptops were manufactured properly we would be seeing much less issues.
-
I agree. There is a huge gap between nVidia chip and a heatsink copper contact. After I inserted a piece of copper with Acrylic Silver 5 on both sides, the gap has decreased significantly. Before, there was a lousy piece of the thermal paste, which was barely touching, if at all, the heatsink. Both nVidia's and HP's screwed up big time.
I'll post my temperatures for various parts shortly. -
Here is the temperature for various parts of my laptop as measured by HW Monitor program. Please let me know if they are within prescribed limits.
Thanks.

abaddon4180 Notebook Virtuoso
Is that under load or idle?
-
Idle. The temperatures were a few degrees higher while under load.

That seems a little high for idle but if the temps are only a few degrees C higher under load then you don't really have a problem. Could you post your load temps?
-
Its ok for a idle temperature,HP notebooks run warm.
I don't much about mobile graphics but 58C looks high on idle if you play games,it will get hot. -
I don't play games on this laptop. When I watched a DVD and streamed a movie from youtube simultaneously, the GPU temperature went up to 66C.
