I'm debating between a Dell 1520 and an HP that I just saw this morning that Circuit City has on sale this week for $749. It seems to be a great buy in that they are including a router & printer in the deal. I've read a lot of good things about HP's screens. How would they compare with Dell's standard 1280 x 800 glossy screen? Are they be about the same as far as brightness & colors go?

    TBH,

Between two glossy screens which are on same resolution you wouldn't see the difference unless they were side by side. And that is IF there is a difference to be seen.

Now I run mostly Matte screens. I have my current Latitude D630 and I often see HP business models with a matte screen at work. Both are crystal clear and I have nothing to complain about.
What you could do is inform yourself on the actual brightness levels those two screens can reach, which is probably the only true difference between both of them.

    cheers

I think they are very close. When I go to look at the computers in Best Buy or Circuit City, I always think the HPs are the best looking. I think the Dell 640m w/ TrueLife I had was just as good as HP.
