If someone bought me a hp notebook as a gift and the notebook was bought under his name, does the warranty still work for me? Or if something happens, must I always go thru him to make use of the warranty? Thanks

He needs to call HP and transfer the ownership of the computer. Just about any customer service rep should be able to do that. Make sure the original owner has any purchase info (what credit card, address, etc) on hand.
Just in case though, make sure you keep a copy of the original receipt. -
thanks! appreciate it

Unless, and I maybe wrong here, if your benefactor bought it from a reseller and have not used it register the product, in which case, you should be entitled to the warranty and have no problems.
