We want to purchase a new HP laptop, but wonder what will happen if we purchase a 3 yr warranty and they stop selling laptops? Maybe a silly question, but it does concern us that they may not provide good service if they don't have to keep selling computers.

They aren't going to stop making computers. They are considering spinning off the personal computing business. Regardless, HP will still be around and honoring warranties.

Recent news stated they might cancel spinning off their PC division.

It's basically what happened when IBM shed its personal computing business and sold it to Lenovo. Package up the assets, intellectual property, etc. of the business and sell it or keep it under a different name. There are several possibilities, but as long as HP doesn't fold entirely, your warranties will be honored.
