I have a dv 5000t notebook and the usb port does not work my obd scan tool. it worked fine until yesterday. when i plug in the usb device it says usb device not recognized. The device manager says unknown device. It works in three desktops and one old laptop. i reinstalled the operating system and hp tells me to go to there special support section at $59.00. The notebook is only three months old. I bought it at costco with a six month return policy.the OBDScan tool requires about 150ma, a USB mouse only needs about 50ma. The OBDScan also need the full 5.0v as defined by the USB specification. according to the manufacture.

Possible workaround: try a powered USB hub? I've had that fix oddball USB device problems before.

I paid a lot of money for this notebook and the usb port will not supply the power that it was supposed to. My old EMachines works fine. A powered hub would require ac adapter to work it? I am using the notebook and obd interface to scan codes in the car. I don't want be using a extention cord to power the usb. A Notebook is supposed to be self contained. It's like when your monitor goes in the notebook and you hook up an enternal one now you have desktop notebook.

This usb device needs the max that the usb port provides. I believe that the usb port is not putting out the proper voltage Sometimes in the safe mode it is recognized. I would like to see if their is any software to check out the voltage. Most usb devices use very little juice all my other usb devices works. The unit is good cause it works in my emachines notebook and three desktops.
