I guess its good if you want a cheap laptop and really don't care too much but I'd need the following...
    Upgrade hard drive - $100
    Upgrade RAM - $50
Get a DVD burner - not sure but I guess $100
~$650.... still cheap but still stuck with only 2 usbs and over 6lbs with a 6 cell battery

At $400 they're going to sell every single one of these, that's just a fantastic price.

$70+ship for a top-of-the-line NEC DVD burner. That, a decent 5400RPM HD (7200RPM would be too expensive), more RAM, minus whatever you'd get for selling the original parts on eBay... still a great deal. For the target market you really only need to upgrade the RAM though.

the margins on this have to be razor thin, it sounds more like a way to get people in the store as i bet there's a lot of people show up for this deal and there just won't be enough units. but once people are there they'll spend some money any way, at least wal mart hopes.

Every gap-toothed, trailer-dwelling, stringy-haired, big fat stretch pants-wearing yokel mama (you know-- the typical WalMart customer!) will be pressing their nose to the glass at 5am on Friday morning, ready to bolt through the doors as soon as they are open, racing for one of these. They'll probably have about 10 per store...!! Yeah, they'll all sell.

Wal Mart is probably actually losing money on these laptops. It is just a way to get people in the store. This would be a great laptop for someone who is not into gaming. It would work just fine for Word processing and the like. If you want one, get to Wal Mart before they are open and line up and get ready to push and shove your way to the laptop section. I have heard that most regular Wal-Marts will have 13 of these and the Super Wal-Marts will have 25. They will all be gone in the first 30 minutes of the store being open.

Wow, that's all per store? 25 at most? That is a lot lower than they originally said, which was 50-100....

I'll wager that they all sell.

I will try to make it out in the AM to snag one of these. If Im a lucky one I will bring home and get 1g of mem for the one slot and just use it for internet and misc. small tasking items.
I think that this is all you can do with it considering.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks

Well, it has low-end specifications, that is for sure, but for what you're paying, you can't beat it. I think that with more RAM and a faster Hard Drive, it will be pretty snappy.

That's all? About 3 years ago we got a comp (although a desktop) from walmart on the friday after thanksgiving. There was supposedly about 90 of them for about $600ish each. They didn't sell out (good thing because we got the defective one). I guess they're ordering less so they will all sell out before 11:00.

definitely a loss leader to get you into store.. thats why they wont sell it online...

since i live in manhattan the hassle of getting to a walmart to try and snag one is just not worth it, i wish cc would run a deal on the v2410us

You are all correct I was up early this morning 3am. When down to the local walmart the line was long.......By the time I got to the electronics counter the labtops were all gone......I spoke with one of the cashier and she told me all they had were 12 of them #$!@ unblieveable. You would think that they would have at least 100 of these in every store. As soon as she told me that I know that it was time to leave and not spend any money in walmart. They just do that in hope of getting people in the store to buy something even though it is not on sale.

Well, here I am just in from the mad rush at walmart, they had 50 units here at my local center, and they were handing out tickets to the people in line to purchase them. Surprise surprise, another 20 bux got knocked off at the counter. 378.00?
I don't care what anyone says , thats a great deal for a lappy, period.

I survived Black Friday at WalMart.

I have also returned from the HELL that is Wal-Mart. I arrived at 3:45am and there was a line around electronics for the laptops. I gave up and went home when I found out that the huge line was for the laptops and they only had 25 in the store. About an hour later a buddy of mine (one of the loss prevention officers for the store) called me and told me that there were two left, because they would not allow them to be put on lay-away. I ran back to the store and used my sons employee discount, along with his Chirstmas discount to walk out of the store with a laptop for $321.00, after tax.

    Now that's a SWEET deal!! :D

I snagged one of these this am... Was at the store at 3am and was 8th in line, with a total of 28 laptops. Although I'll add more RAM it will serve it's purpose as a web surfer. Walmart did pretty good, they handed out tickets to people in line and then called you when they were ready to give you your's. This allowed me to also snag one of the 15' LCD TVs.

It was worth the price of admission to see a few fights and people go to jail for fighting over worthless crap. There were a few people who would try and cut line and for that they got the pleasure of being kicked out of the store.

All in all... a good day :)

Yeah, I let this deal pass me by.... Now I just want to find a deal on the Compaq V2410US.... my goal is to beat the $849 price by $100 that Circuit City and OD are selling it for... Its really a shame there are so many problems with Averatec's 4155, buy.com has it for $930 tax free.

    Hello all,

Is there only ONE DIMM on this notebook or is only one DIMM loaded with 256MB?

    Thanks,

This notebook has two Dimm slots - both are user-accessible. One is occupied by the 256MB stick.

Our Walmart (rural Indiana) had 15 of them. I got there at about 4:00 AM and was number 19 in line. Did not get one. Some people in front of me in line said they arrived at 3:00 AM.

However, they allow at least three people in front of me in line to put these on lay-away. The told lady #15 that she had to pay it off by December 18th. I thought that if she did not have credit card or the money today, what makes here think she'll have the money in three weeks?

Left Walmart (about 5:30) without buying anything. Went to Staples intending to by the Acer notebook they had for $449. Was about 25th in line when they opened. They had 5 of the Acers.

Still looking for a cheap laptop for my wife...

Ah, that's a shame that you didn't get one.

Check out OfficeDepot - they have some good deals on notebooks, and I believe they are having a nice two-day sale right now. Saw a Compaq V2000 for $349.

Whatever notebook you get, make sure that you don't have to sign up for anything, such as AOL, in order to get the deal.

I know this ain't the right forum but CC had $199 Toshiba Celeron, 512mb, 60gm hd with free printer and router. I think it went faster than the Walmart deal. Could have used it for a few months and then sold on ebay for a profit :)

Picked one up this morning in Aliso Viejo, CA. It was pure madness!!!! Haven't had a chance to take it out of the box...took a nap when I got home!

Anyways, I picked up some ram for the machine that seems to be a good deal as well at simple tech.

They require you to buy a year's AOL service with that though, which is pretty useless in this broadband world. Pretty sneaky if you ask me. Plus the Celeron is severely inferior to the Sempron. ATI's GPU is vastly better than the Intel GPU Toshiba uses too.

In my case as far as RAM, I opted for something guaranteed compatible by the manufacturer, but I think generics would be fine as well.

    That's COLD!!!!!!!!!

I went to local walmart and got in line inside(super walmart allready opened) at midnight. I was about 25th in line and told 35 units. when it came time was getting nervous as it seemed that people had cut in line to join friends. It was not handeled well. I did end up getting the laptop for home use and a few other things. Will upgrade ram to 512

I think it's only expandable to one gigabyte, so you can only put 2x512MB sticks in there. Email HP to make sure.

And yes, you can use two different-sized memory sticks at the same time, no problems there.

so 512MBx2 is a much much better idea than a 1GIG?

i fould this on newegg for $118, this is from the Crucial website: CT12864X335 .. but with crucials memory advisor tool it recommends CT459973 (assuming my notebook is a ze2000z, they also had a different result for the ze2000 than the one sold by newegg) ... Im confused, is it alright to use the one from newegg? (in my obvious and logical attempt to save a hundred bucks)
Unless its a better idea to use simply two 512MB's than that paragraph is void. In that case ill probably end up asking the same question when they tell me to use some other 512's than the ones sold at the low newegg price...
sorry about pestering you all about this. i am just trying to find the right RAM for my new notebook, this info could also be beneficial to anyone else who wants to upgrade RAM just right as well for this wal-mart $-saver of a notebook.

so I think I got the best end of this deal my husband got off work at 1 snuck in the house changed snuck out unnoticed by me drove 30 min to walmart one of the smaller ones figuring less people would be there(yeah right) got in line at 2 he was number 4 in line. waited till doors opened at 5 and had to sprint to the other side of the store as people were running to get to it there were only 10 at this store they sold for 378 which was a bargain because the original add we got for it was listed at 488. He then hopped over to comp usa (no lines) bought me a new router and a case for it and snuck back in the door at 8. so I got this from the comfort of my own bed thanks to my devoted husband. I'm not looking to do anymore than internet and word processing on it so it is great for me I use my desktop for all the other strenuous stuff. So far I think its great but I noticed that a fully charged batt. doesn't last long but hey the price is right. :p

I picked up a similar modelled presario m2105us today for the same price and have noticed so far that the ram is lacking but for general surfing it works good.

does anyone know why does it listed processor speed as 795MHz when you go to start --> control panel --> performance and maintainance --> system? i thought it's supposed to have 1.6GHz Sempron Processor.

We arrived at our 24 hr Wal-Mart around 1:30. We went to electronics and played the new XBOX 360 demo. Beat the demo and got in line around 2:00. We played cards for a while and talked to the nice people in line. At 5:00 they announced to begin and the nice Wal-Mart lady gave my husband a tag for laptop #6 and my son a tag for laptop #7, both which are nicely tucked away in the layaway dept.
Which I did not have the money to purchase today, the previous disgruntled customer  who did not receive one might ask what makes me think if I don't have a credit card or money today that I will by December 18 BECAUSE I pay CASH for everything and I NEVER charge anything and my husband works 60-70 hrs a week and enough money will pass through my hands that I could purchase 15-20 of them before Christmas. He's a sore loser. :D
Our Wal-Mart had 40, one 15 miles away had 15, and another about 7 miles away had 60.
I think our Wal-Mart did a super job this year in maintaining order, and not just because I got 1 or 2. No one fell down no one pushed and no one shoved.

It does that to save power, and produce less heat. It is a common feature of Mobile processors.

Run MobileMeter and you'll see a graph of your CPU switching between 800MHz and full speed as needed. You definitely want to leave power management enabled.

To make it run at maximum speed, go into the Control Panel, open the Power Options, and put it on "Home/Office Desk", hit Apply, and that's it. I just thought I would tell you that you are better off leaving it on Portable/Laptop mode, because that is how the computer is designed to run. You won't have any problems. If you do make the comptuer run at maximum speed all the time, the machine is going to be a lot hotter and the fans will be on more.

Note - the processor will not run at maximum speed on battery no matter what - it will only spool up if you are doing a very processor intensive application.

If your battery or AC power icon is on the taskbar you can just left click on the icon and it will have all of the power options. I leave mine set on portable/laptop when im browsing or whatever but when I want to play BF2 or something I just left click and change to Always On and then the processor will run at its full 2.0Ghz. There might be settings to change it but this works easiest for me.

...Has anyone had an issue with the internal wireless card?

    Here's what I know:
1)HP desktop, with D-Link USB wireless adapter works fine
2)Previous HP Pavilion laptop with internal wireless broadcom card works fine

(Both of the above computers are upstairs, the router and main computer are downstairs)

3)I get this walmart cheap deal home, and the wireless card (SAME version as in my other Pavilion) only picks up the signal downstairs. If I move it upstairs, it recognizes the there's a network available, but it gets a message saying "Windows cannot connect; may be due to loss of signal etc etc" something along those lines. I spoke with HP support on the phone, and they walked me thru a few things...the guy says there is a problem with the actual wireless card, and they were going to send a new one out. (Even tho it's brand new, they still needed a credit card as "collateral," per the CSR's exact wording, until I send the old wireless card in).

I understand that signals may suffer from some attenuation the farther the receiver is from the transmitter, but the 2 other computers recieve the signal just fine. Is this guy on the right track, that the actual card itself is bad?

    Thanks!

I was able to pick up one of these as well. Great machine for the money. I threw another 256mb ram chip in it and it is running beautifully with 512mb now. Actually a bit less since the on board video is using 64mb of it. For those of you who do not know, after I installed the other 256mb chip, the video memory automatically allocated 128mb of itself. So I just went into the bios and manually set it to use 64mb. It is easy to do and there are a few options there to choose from.
