Hello, new here and hardly know anything about computers. I have an older ze4300 and at startup would blue screen (this was about three years ago) and at the time did not want to deal with it so I went out and bought a desktop. Well, I blew the dust off the laptop and kind of want to learn a little more about computers.
At startup the screen comes on in black and white says "SMART failure " then a long list of numbers/letters and something about backing up now, is this emminant of HD failure? if I continue and hit F1 it will go through the first XP page with the blue curser and as soon as it progresses from that page will blue screen and go back to where it started......just wanting to know what I can replace to make it work again, thanks.

It's a failed hard drive. You just need to replace your hard drive.
Here's the service manual to your computer in PDF format: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00246219.pdf
See page 2-9. -
Thanks 2.0 if you could give me your email i would really appreciate to ask you a few more questions as I am new to this

You can PM me. It's the forum's version of email. Just click my name on any post of mine and a drop down menu will give you the option of sending me a personal message(PM).

I realize that but it may be because I am so new that it wont give me the option to PM you thats why i was asking about the email.....anyways, i was looking for 2.5" Internal IDE Notebook Hard Drives is there any specific ones I should use/not use? I dont want to sink alot of money in this thing as its old and may have other issues, found a 30gb which would be wayyyy more then enough wondering if there is anything smaller, that one was about $40. maybe what exactly I should be looking for, thanks.

You can find some used pulls of IDE/PATA 20Gb Hitachi Travelstars or Toshibas on Ebay for around $25-$32 shipped. 6GB ones for around $16 shipped. Nothing much to watch out for. TheToshibas I found to be better than the Hitachis. Though in my old notebooks, I never had a failure with either. Since it's XP and you probably won't need so much space, you could get away with a 6GB.
For example:
20GB:

http://cgi.ebay.com/20GB-2-5-IDE-NO...emQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item27af91bfc0
6GB:

Thanks 2.0, I will go w/ a 6gb and see how that goes and post back with what i find thanks so much for the help!

Alright, got the drive in, followed instructions from the PDF HP you gave me, and as it started up i hit esc, pushed the cd/dvd drive like prompted, then says "media test failure, check cable" and then follows that with "operating system not found" and thats as far as it goes, this is with the disc 1 recovery disk going, any help I would really appreciate thanks.
