Let's say you have one each of the two laptops above: the zt3000 say a 1.7 GHz, and the zx5000 a 3.00 GHz. All other options basically the same: 512 MB RAM, 60 GB HD, DVD/CD+RW, 15.4 screen, dedicated video memory (64 or 128 MB), etc.

What would the advantage be with the Pentium 4 zx5000? Would it really run that much faster? Does the fan run constantly on the zx5000? I've read both: it's seldom on, and it's on all the time.

So, what's the advantage with the P4 over Pentium M? Thanks.

The fan is seldom on. I notice only when playing games and then its not on all the time. But, it all depends on how intensive the game is etc.

    HP zx5000 - P4 3.0HT, XP Home - 15.4" Brightview WXGA - 128mb ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 - 512MB SDRAM (1x512) - 60GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive - DVD/CD-RW Drive - 802.11b/g WLAN & Bluetooth

The Pentium M 1.7Ghz (Dothan) will operate at approx the same or faster than the P4 3.0Ghz system. Here's a link you may want to look at, it compares the P4 & Pentium M (Banias & Dothan) CPU's. You'll notice the 1.7Ghz Dothan can hold its own.

The only plus I can see with going for the ZX5000, is the fact that the video card is better than the ZT3000. The ATI 9600 in the ZX is way better than the ATI 9200 in the ZT.

If you're concerned about the fan noise, get a Pentium M notebook. They run a lot cooler and doesn't need the be cooled as often. Now, I'm not saying the fan will never come one, but it will run a lot less than the P4's.

P4's beat out the Pentium M when creating data. Creating/encoding video and music would be much faster on the P4.

If you're gonna be playing the newest games in the market, GPU (video card) power will be what you need. CPU power rarely will make a dent in overall performance.
