Hi. I'm thinking of purchasing this notebook for my startup small business. I'm wondering if I can get by without a desktop if I buy this. Any thoughts? I don't need much in the way of graphic abilities, mostly lesson plan development and internet capaiblities. Thanks. Also, I've seen this model on line for $1149.88 with $50 rebate al the way up to $1500. What do you have to pay to get a notebook that will last a few years?

Good choice. It's a zv5000z variant. Very good machine for getting work done and it's ready for 64-bit WinXP. If you're patient you can get a Configure-To-Order zv5000z direct from hp.com and get some neat upgrades that aren't available in the retail box versions (figure 2 weeks, give or take), but if you find a retail box version that's about right, go for it. Circuit City appears to have the best deal at the moment:

$1025 after rebate. Geeze, that's cheap. Circuit City has recently become a very good place to shop for Athlon 64 machines.

The Compaq R3000z series is almost the same but with a different case and weaker speakers.

I used Circuit City and Best Buy to check out the basics for my new laptop(i.e screen options, keyboard layout). I then went to the HP website to order. I settled on the zv5000t with the P4. After all was said and done, I was able to get a memory upgrade (1x512 for future expansion), faster rpm hard drive, upgrade on the dvd/cd combo drive, and added the Bluetooth option for about the same price as a the retail store and their funky rebates and promotions. After researching the forums on this website, those "little" upgrades gave me an extra kick versus the "off-the-shelf" units. Also, my experience with HP was great. From date of order to delivery to my house, 8 days!

In your post, it sounded like you might be in the education field. If so, you can probably sign up for HP's education discount to save more $.

    XPbargains.com posts deals daily.

Also, COSTCO stocks some decent units at their stores, but their inventory is always changing.

    That's my .02 worth.
