i haven't gotten mine from costco yet. i think it really takes around 8-10 business days.. it's weird, the invoice has two shipment dates (4-6 weeks and 8-10 business days). im just hoping i wont have any dead pixels.. not sure what i'll do if i have any.
-
well, good luck to those of you who ordered from Costco, I do hope that I am just the unlucky one, other wise, that means HP is having some problem with their LCD's quality control.... which means it probably won't help me even if they replace it[8]
-
hey everyone, I got a question. this one dead pixel isn't really all that bad, and im willing to overlook it, but my friend said that if it has a bad pixel, it has a tendecy to spread from that. is this true?
TIA
oh yeah and does anyone think theirs is kinda dark too?

as the adage goes, "if something is too good to be true....."I could hardly believe people were getting those deals when I initially heard about them, but I think the correlation of the products people are recieving is either an indicator or a really bad coincidence...

I got mine yesterday too. Ordered on the 16th from OD. My machine is perfect with no dead pixels. The speakers are not as dynamic/clear and loud as my R3000Z w/JBLs and I didn't see SoundMax either. I don't think these are Harman Kardons. From what I've heard HKs are better than JBLs. Damn HP for using cheaper speakers.

I have no dead pixels on my laptop. I haven't really played with it yet. I have too many things going on right now but after I get some use will put a review together
I just found that the new Windows XP for the 64-bit processor will have a free upgrade from Microsoft. Instead of me typing it all out here is a link:

What do you folks think so far of the display quality on your zv6000? Please specify if you have the 15" XGA, 15.4" WXGA, or 15.4" WXGA with BrightView.
The WSXGA+ (1680x1050) screen on my Dell Inspiron 6000 seems nice, but I'm a first-time laptop owner and not sure if this screen will be superior enough to keep the Dell instead of my zv6000 which should be arriving soon. I ordered the zv6000 15.4" WXGA without BrightView.
My eyesight is good and I am accustomed to 1600x1200 resolution on my 21" CRT monitor at work, but I don't expect to be doing stuff very often on the laptop that would take good advantage of the greater resolution on the Dell laptop.
Is there reason to believe the Dell's WSXGA+ is better in ways other than native resolution - for example, clarity, color richness, brightness/contrast, etc.
I'd like to get a good idea of the comparison between the 2 displays without having to open up my new zv6000. If I decide not to keep it, I'd like to sell it as factory-sealed, never opened. -
The display quality on my 15.4" WXGA with BrightView is very nice. Maybe just me but the screen is not as shiny or glossy as the R3000Z but it's brighter though. To me this is a good thing --> Less glaring. There was a thread earlier by another user experiencing the same thing.

Received my ZV6000 from OD yesterday. Love it, no dead pixel.
I like BrightView WXGA better than the WSXGA. WSXGA is good but the default font size is little small to read for a long time. WXGA is perfect for me and the BrightView looks great when watch DVD.
Before I bought Zv6000, I also checked out Inspiron 6000 at Dell direct store. It seems that the WXGA pixel on Inspiron 6000 is bigger than the WXGA on ZV6000, so the Dell WXGA font looks a little rought on edge.

Has anyone else noticed that their zv6000 shipment was only insured by HP for $500? Maybe it's a calculated risk on their part, or else it gives us a better idea of their actual cost??
-
Thanks for the screen feedback.
What I see on my Inspiron WSXGA+ when browsing various web sites is, the text on many/all sites seems very fuzzy/distorted/jumbled. I'm not sure if this is an inherent problem with all widescreen monitors (or only if they are set to a widescreen aspect ratio - e.g. 1280x800, 1680x1050), or a problem specific to the WSXGA+ on my Inspiron.
I've tinkered slightly with the display settings (Clear Font, 96dpi font size vs. 120, etc.) but don't totally know what I'm doing. Haven't noticed much difference in text quality on web sites regardless of display settings.
If this is just the way things are when surfing the web with a widescreen monitor, then I may as well drop down to the WXGA 1280x800 on the zv6000 and forego the extra cost of the WSGXA+. -

I got the regular WXGA (not brightview) and the screen is great. It's so nice and big. I really like it.
Have you guys tested out the optical drive yet? It seems that when a CD is running at full speed, the door makes a loud rattling noise. The noise goes away when I apply pressure to the door for the drive.
Anybody experience/deal with this?

Update: Nevermind. Make sure when you close the drive you push the door all the way back in.

Quick question (or to those who haven't received their's yet it's an FYI)...
Most, if not all, sites list the zv6k as having both dedicated vertical & HORIZONTAL scrollzones within its touchpad...However, I'm pretty certain that this is only the case with the r4k and not zv6k. -
yup, you are right, there's only verticle scroll, no horizontal

lol, I've been wondering why the whole time seeing that Sempron 3000+
(not even 3200+) processor in your sig.
Integrated wireless w/bluetooth is a must even if you don't have a router...you are able to access free/pay wifihotspots & (maybe) your neighbors' home networks or at least use wireless bluetooth mouses w/out adding anything add'l. -

From what I understand, you can add the PCI card relatively easy...However, the range is key & the antenna is supposedly inserted behind the LCD screen, that can be tricky/complicated.

you can change the number and type of applications loaded at bootup in your system options.. that will decrease boot up time and increase efficiency if any of those programs are uselessly running in the background.
I have a question about Windows 64? is everyone who got the zv6000 going to upgrade to windows 64bit? if anyone has, can you report to us if there are any driver conflicts as stated in the article? i'm really ineterested in taking full advantage of a 64bit processor. Also, how much faster will it make my comp? better for heavy application (ie games, video ediitng?)
thanks. -
Well I thought all was well with my zv6000 til I noticed my 12 cell battery wear level is at 9% after never being used (through mobilemeter). Could someone check their wear level out via mobilmeter...perhaps this battery is not supported in the software...or perhaps my battery is defective. Just looking for more info before I call HP.

Windows XP 64-bit, a virtual minefield?
Apr 27, 2005, 07:30 AM
By: Sander Sassen
Granted, youll have to give it to Microsoft for often being overly optimistic about their accomplishments. As honestly what other company would be pitching a product thats been delayed by almost two years and features nothing new but for 64-bit support like it is a quantum leap from the 32-bit version of Windows XP? In truth the 64-bit version of Windows XP is far from that, at best it is a Windows kernel with 64-bit extensions that works on a handful of systems with a very specific hardware configuration, or to be specific on hardware that has working 64-bit drivers. I say this with caution as the fine print in the press release states that only a limited number of peripherals is natively supported by the operating system, due to lack of a driver. For all of your other 64-bit driver needs youll have to look towards the manufacturer of your motherboard, graphics or sound card, printer, scanner, etc. to write a 64-bit driver.
Naturally the majority of these manufacturers will not be very motivated to do that unless Windows XP 64-bit gains significant market share or products can be sold at a higher price with the added 64-bit driver support, thus increasing their profit margins. Either way youre lost for drivers unless your hardware is natively supported or the manufacturer gets his act together. Unless this manufacturer is ATI and to a lesser extent NVIDIA youll be hard pressed to see a 64-bit driver soon, as the majority of manufacturers issue a driver update about twice a year, so you could be in for a long wait. Until then, dont expect your hardware to even squeak, 32-bit drivers are not going to work, and if it isnt supported you might as well take it out.
But theres more, Microsoft has also put into place an upgrade program for current users of 32-bit Windows XP. Unfortunately this upgrade program is only valid for PCs that came shipped with Windows XP preinstalled so most enthusiasts are out of luck. But matters get worse; by applying for this upgrade your current product key for your copy of 32-bit Windows XP will become void, so you cant go back after youve installed Windows XP 64-bit, as your product key will not work anymore when you register with Microsoft. Obviously you wont know whether you would like to keep working with this new version of Windows, and whether your applications and drivers work, after youve installed it.
If that isnt a virtual minefield I dont know what is. You risk to go from a perfectly working system running 32-bit Windows XP, to a non working 64-bit Windows XP and lose your 32-bit Windows XP product key in the process without the ability to go back. To further frustrate end users Microsoft makes very clear that the installation of Windows XP 64-bit will void any support with your PC manufacturer. One free support call will be provided by Microsoft for any installation-related issues whereas additional calls to Microsoft support will be available on a pay-per-incident basis. If that doesnt convince you to steer clear of Windows XP 64-bit for now you must either be really foolhardy or be feeling exceptionally lucky today,
Sander Sassen. -

What a bunch of FUD. First of all, Windows XP x64 ships with, what, 16,000 or so drivers? Unless you have something exotic like my USB HDTV box you'll probably be OK. Second, there's no mention of the tighter security (32-bit WinXP didn't enable Enhanced Virus Protection for all applications by default, 64-bit WinXP does), partially due to it being a variant of the Windows 2003 SP1 codebase. Third, they completely ignore the performance boost you get with 64-bit apps, at least when you're running a real AMD64 chip and not Intel's.
I am annoyed at Microsoft for not letting us upgrade WinXP Home licenses to WinXP x64. They do offer a free trial license of WinXP x64 though:

Being negative to everything new (and improved) can be a sign of schizophrenia. [
]
This is the way it has always been. Some people just want to highlight the negative to make them feel more secure about what they already got, so they don't need to feel they have to change anything. When things went 32 bit it was the same thing. I remember when Windows 95 came out, when Windows XP came out and so on, same ting...every time!
