I am planning on purchasing an HP 9700t Notebok, and I was wondering if the Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer supports writing Blu-Ray as well. Under Introducing the Blu-ray DVD Player, it says that "you can read Blu-ray discs, and read and write traditional DVDs and CDs." However, when I click on More about our Blu-ray DVD player, I see this:

Capabilities of HP's Blu-ray Disc player:

Blu-ray Disc Traditional DVD Traditional CD
    Read Yes Yes Yes
    Write Yes Yes Yes

I was wondering if someone could clear this up for me?

I'm not sure why it says that, but if it's a Blu-ray ROM drive, it won't support writing to Blu-ray discs.

Yeah.. that's what I was thinking, but it's misleading.

    Thank you

Yup it can only read Blu-ray discs. Otherwise it would be way more expensive.

Until blank Blu-Ray discs come down substantially in price, I don't see much practicality in burning them at the consumer level. The time required to fill a disc is enormous, and the chances of a coaster is great.

It would be nice to have had Lightscribe incorporated into that drive though.

AFAIK if your blu ray drive can read write on dvdr then most probably it can write on there also. You could try nero burning software to countercheck your bluray drive capability.

No it won't write to a blu-ray disk but you can create a compatible blu-ray disk by burning to a DVD single or dual layer and it will work fine in most if not all blu-ray players.
