So, apparently, word got out. This was primarily meant for the consumption of NBR readers as an OT post, but I feel like I need to clarify certain doubts people may have.

I've worked with HP's order and shipping process enough to know how this could have happened (people unfamiliar with the process would find it strange, but I do not). HP and its ODMs like Inventec often do bulk shipping, i.e. the notebook you ordered is often shipped in a larger pallet containing other orders as it is more cost effective to do so rather than have a shipment out every other day, especially to a small market like Australia. That's why you'll often see your orders completing production, but only shipped a few days later.

What I guessed happened in this case was they have this power cord order, but had nothing else to ship at that time to Australia and since they exceeded the maximum time to deliver, they just decided to put it into a box and ship it as the standard process would direct the workers to. Hence, why this is particularly amusing is because the pallet only consisted of my single order and nothing else, hence it was forwarded to me directly without being repacked at the local warehouse in Sydney.

It's the process that they have in place for shipping and distribution, and the workers are not to blame. They do not have the instructions to handle exceptions like this and for a big company like HP, apparently it is more costly to cater to exceptions like this than to let it fall apart in about 10% of cases.

glad when i ordered a replacement power supply from them it didnt arrve in a box like that, just two small ones like the one inside the box. I would have struggled to fit it in my car as i wasnt home when they tried to deliver so i had to go and pick it up from the delivery company.

    Hey chrixx,

Oh God, this is so ridiculous. But i think, there is no intend of company behind this. It may be the packaging fault. You can also make a bid for compensation.

What annoys me about this überpackaging is that it generates so much overhead costs which have to be paid for by customers. And there you go wondering why a replacement LED screen will suddenly cost 750 EUR....

The funny thing is, he won't but the rest of us will the next time we have to pay a higher shipping rate because someone at HP screwed up and they need to recoup their loss.

    Strange bump.

Re: Jeb from a few pages back - to "fry" someone is Chinese slang for firing. More specifically, to "fry someone's squid."

    LOL that's soooooooo funny!

It probably didn't cost HP anything to ship it to you in that huge box though...they have a monthly/yearly shipping agreement with FedEx...like a fee that covers all their shipments for that month/year

That is a fantastic idea. But I would not bet against the idea that HP would then have the gall to charge him back for the time they had to spend disassembling and disposing of the packaging.

I love how everyone is saying "What HP did" when it is clear from the original post that HP never touched it, the shipment came directly from a subcontracted Chinese company.

This is true. But the company represents HP, and HP should define policy and practices. Not even arguable if it has an HP label on it or HP branded documentation in it.

The OP (way back in 2009) should really be flogged for ordering (from HP or whomever) what looks like a standard IEC power cable that could have been purchased at RadioShack for fifteen bucks.

I wonder who did the quality check before they send this box for shipping.
