Can anyone provide insight into it? I mean I kind of want one since my campus doesn't allow torrents and there's only two TVs in our commons. I want to have some user feedback before I jump the gun since that $130 could be spent getting some much-needed notebook accessories with my new laptop.

I'm also looking into this tv tuner. Where can you get it for $130? The cheapest I could find is $170.
-
I'd like to know if this tuner has closed caption (CC)?
If not, then what TV Tuners out there have the closed caption (CC) feature? -
From what I've read, it's a quality tuner (just make sure you get the right version, as there are many floating around out there including analog and non-Vista compatible models). Just remember that it's proprietary and isn't compatible with non-HP systems. You might want to look into getting a quality external USB tuner instead.
I was looking into getting one too. Let us know how it turns out if you do get it. -
There is a review on the forum about the Hauppauge WinTV HVR 950 USB HDTV TV tuner. It cost around $100-$120.
-
The HP and all other TV Tuners I have used support Closed Caption, including the Quickplay software has the option to turn CC on and off. My Two favorite USB based tuners are the Pinnacle Hybrid Stick USB(Dual ATSC(Digital)/NTSC(Analog)) it comes with the tuner device which is a little bit bigger than a USB Flash memory stick, Antenna, Dongle for Svideo/Cable input and a small remote control, the cost is a around $130. I also like the Kworld Plus TV u330(Dual ATSC(Digital)/NTSC(Analog)), it comes with the USB Device about the same size as the Pinnacle, the Antenna is slightly smaller but it does not include a remote control, but the cost is $79 plus they have a $30 rebate at the moment (From Outpost.com) Both devices work with Vista and XP and work with Media Center. I like the software that comes with the Kworld(Arcsoft Total Media 3) as the Pinnacle software(TV Center Pro) for Vista is buggy at best.

Overall, for someone who can't quite get an HDTV, this is the best $130 I've ever spent on computer parts. -
This is the Link to the review http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3336&review=Hauppauge+TV+Tuner+Review

I wanted to know specifically about the TV Tuner that HP sells with its laptops. But thanks for the other info and I'll be sure to look into those too.
-
i have one but its external.. it only cost about 40 dollars.. it has its own remote already.. try visiting www.gadmei.com
-
Yeah, it will be good to know since the hp tv tuner is an xpress card so that give a little more mobility than a USB tv tuner.
-
Now I hate to break the shrink wrap, cause my HP only has Turion 1.6 GHz and box says needs 2.8 Centrino for analog recording to hard drive. God knows what it takes for HD recording.
An optional extra from Hauppauge is the $17 remote control. -
Yeah, but only analog with HP Express crd tuner. No HDTV! Way outta date
-
f15HP Which tuner is it, that you are enthusiastic about?
-
Well it is HDTV, HP's website says
" Enjoy your digital entertainment anywhere, anytime with the HP Expresscard TV Tuner for Notebooks with Windows Vista. This TV Tuner is designed to let consumers watch, record, and pause live TV using Windows Vista(TM) or the HP QuickPlay TV feature on their notebook. The solution consists of a TV Tuner, Media Remote Control, IR Receiver/Blaster (with Vista Premium and Ultimate Only), S-Video and Composite dongle and an antenna. The TV tuner card fits into the 54mm ExpressCard Slot. This hybrid tuner delivers both high-definition(1) capable digital ATSC and traditional analog NTSC. It also converts your notebook into a TV and/or a mobile PVR so you can record your favorite shows and then watch them while you are on the go. (1) High-definition content (e.g. WMV HD files) is required to view high-definition images. Most current DVDs do not provide high-definition images. This television receiver provides display of television closed captioning in accordance with 15.119 of the FCC Rules. Microsoft and Windows are U.S. registered trademarks of Microsoft Corporation." -

My favorite USB tuner by far is the AutumnWave OnAir series. The Creators do analog in hardware, the more portable GT in software like your Hauppauge. They support both OTA and unencrypted digital cable HDTV. Their support is excellent, they even have 64-bit Vista drivers. These guys have the best price I've seen (formerly Copperbox where I bought my tuner):

Yes, my dual core Turion is working fine with the Haupauge WinTV-HVR 950. Cpu running at about 40% on HD station. About 25% on std. analog station.
Now if I only knew how to turn on closed captions in Media Center; it says it can't find a tuner. According to an email from Hauppage, the WinTV 2000 software does not support closed captioning, and the CSR suggests I use Media Center. -
-
But I have Media Center --don't know how to make it work.
I can play DVDs in Quick Play, and turn on captions. -
How exactly does the tv tuner work? What I mean is what gets connected to what and how is it all setup?
-
does every one know that on feb 19 2009 they are going to stop broadcasting analog soo dont get a analog tuner.. it wont work..
-
I have the HP Digital/Analog tv tuner, and it's great. I highly recommend it, and I suggest using Windows Media Center instead of HP QuickPlay. It's got a much better interface.
using it with analog signals is decent. Using it with digital tv signals is great.
I recommend checking out this website to see if you'd get a decent signal with the channels you may want to watch. -
I don't see how you can possible stop analog broadcasting. What about all the pocket tv sold in stores for people who camp or boat or are on the go. That just does'nt seem like a good move

Our entire county is supposed to unveil free wifi to everyone by 2008, with paid upgrades available. Perhaps free broadcasting will move from TVs with antennas to lappies with Interwebs access.

Does hp's tv tuner bought in America support PAL(european) analog signal?
-
*bumping an old thread*
i wanna buy the tuner but i've a quick question
lets say i subscribe to a movie channel (thru dish network), can i watch the channel through this tv tuner? do i've to additional components for watching cable channels over the air? -
hello there,
i am sorry to bring this up again, but, someone said on the first page that this tuner won't work on non hp laptops.
has anyone tried it on another laptop? i have got the possibility to buy one, and ai have got an acer laptop... -
try this tuner:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815100036
it does much more than the HP tuner and its half the price
ATSC/NTSC/ClearQAM/Component
plus, it fits completely into the expresscard slot (it doesn't stick out like the HP one)
it also won a Design and Engineering award at CES2008 -
yes, i would love the avermedia, the one with a remote control, but thee difference is: i cand get the avermedia for about 70 euros whil the hp i can get at 47 euros so... for me, it makes a difference
