Let's say I get another laptop in the future after getting the upgrade kit. Will I be able to do a clean install of windows 7 on a different laptop(that has its own license key) using a similar method to the one described in the sticky? Or does the upgrade kit only allow you to install windows 7 on the same laptop?

If you buy a new laptop in the future for say with windows 7 already on it, then you can use that laptops cd key. The disc and the cd key are not linked together. At least they arent in vista and the install procedure on windows 7 is basically the same. By the way the free upgrade kit will work on any computer, its not only tied to the one they provided it for.

The upgrade kit will only work on HP computers as the OEM key is activated against HP's cert only. However, the DVD will be a clean Windows 7 DVD which you can use to install for any computer. You will just need a different OEM key for non-HP computers.

So if I order an HP laptop with Windows Vista Ultimate (comes with the Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade kit), the upgrade kit won't work on any other PC (say, my desktop that has Vista Business installed) but the HP laptop I ordered?

Legally, it won't work unless your desktop is a HP desktop (or has an HP BIOS *hint*).

If I purchase the upgrade kit, does that mean I can do a clean installation of windows on my laptop without having to install all those hp programs? all i have to do is install the drivers?

I really hope this is the case, it would make it easier to get up and running in the case of system failure.

Does the installation check what computer I have? I will probably leave the HP laptop as the Vista, and install 7 on the desktop if that's possible at all.

Windows 7 activation on laptops, ia in bios. So if you want to put your hp disk in another hp lappy, you need to make sure the bios is one that has been modified, by hp or some mod site, so it can activate.
