My computer broke recently and I (sort of) fixed it. It ended up being two issues. One was broken sectors on my hdd and the other was a memory issue. Now I tried running the Primary Hard Disk Self Test and I got past the quick test with no issues. Now I am stuck on the full test. It had been running for about and hour and a half and no progress has been made. It is still at 00%. It said it would take about 71 minutes, but as I said before, nothing has made any progress. Any suggestions?
UPDATE: I can't even quit the test by pressing Esc. I guess the only way to quit would be to manually turn off, but I am afraid that might corrupt data.

This happened to me also. It seems the self-test crashes if there is a bad sector that hasn't been remapped yet. If you backup all your data and then run a full format on the disk it will fix the issue (assuming it is the same issue I had). In the meantime I would run an app like Everest and check what the SMART test results are.. you may have a faulty hard drive. (one or two bad sectors doesn't count as being faulty as far as HP are concerned as these will be remapped as soon as a write is attempted on them).
EDIT: Also the answer is yes you can turn your machine off - it wont damage the hard drive.
