I just bought a dv7 and it is a perfect laptop for a first few days. but it got a basic flaw: fan

the fan ran all the time and loud. so I disabled "always on" from BIOS, but it became worst. it run for 5 seconds, then stop for 5 seconds or so, then run again. imagine that your house AC runs a few minutes, then stop a few minutes. the repeat again and again. it is very annoying.

I had a cheap gateway before and its fan is much better. it is not as loud as HP. its fan ran a few minutes when temp reachs 45 degree, and then stop and won't run again until the temp reach 45 degree. so it is very random depend on usage and room temp.

does this issue happend to all HP laptop? another flaw is that the hot air blow down. if I put the laptop on my belly or my lap, I can feel the hot air. other laptops blow side way, not down. what the heck HP was thinking?

The fan issue comes with all HP's. They are hot machines.

As for your lap/belly, the air is blown backwards, and sucked up from the bottom. Also the bottom of the laptop itself gets really hot, so I'd suggest getting a cooler or something to prevent the laptop from burning you.

I am surppised that there was no mention of this issue in the HP reviews here. it is not even in the "con" list. I search the forum and very little discussed here.

my laptop don't have dedicated graphic card, it just has the new intel 4500 card. I expect minimal fan and battery draw.

arrhhhh. I guess nothing is perfect. HP got all the features I want. it looks nice and flashy but the fan. why HP design the fan to turn on and off constantly, very few seconds? or even more stupid "always on" out of the box? don't they care about battery and noise?

:( One of my old notebooks was a toshiba which had absolutely horrendous heat and fan issues. I hope this isn't the case for the dv5t

it's not a con on anyone's list because this is a laptop so it's a given that the fan will be on. desktop fans are on a lot as well but no one complains about them....?

it's all subject to personal preference. i have absolutely no problem with the fan since its so quiet anyway. it only runs on the high setting when i am gaming . otherwise, with the t9600 processor, 2 hard drives and a 512mb video card, my unit runs relatively cool and quiet. not pin-drop silent, but quiet enough that im not annoyed by it.

so, yeah, i really think this has to do with personal preference. i have seen maybe two other people mention the fan noise but most people hardly even notice it or are annoyed by it.

and just for the record - i have the back of my dv7t propped up by two 1inch high wood cubes that i put under each side of the unit. i've seen a huge drop in temps running it this way as opposed to having the unit flat on the desk.

Which cpu did you choose for it, the T5800 or T5900?

it won't matter if you game with all the game noise. but it matter alot if you are browsing the web and reading in a quiet room. and the fan is "on, off, on off...." how do you like that.

I am fine if it is one for a little longer so that it can stay off longer. but it is on very short, for few seconds, the off very short, then on again.

I had a $400 gateway laptop and I had no complain about its fan and noise at all. I actully like how the fan worked alot. but this HP is very unacceptable.

If you would of went with the P7350 - P8100 they run off a different architecture which run about 10c cooler and you would of got far less fan action. Intel® Core™2 Duo Mobile Processor Look in the MFG Tech field you're is 65nm the others are 45nm about 20-5% cooler, the $50 - $100 makes a difference.

I am getting DV5t with P7350 and it should be delivered tomorrow. Hopefully it will work better.

I don't think the problem is the heat. the issue is the logic with which the BIOS/software control the fan. I am talking about on and off contanstly within seconds.

I been building my PC for years and upgrade laptop cpu many times. never experience this annoying fan.

Just a couple of months ago I went from a T7500 to a T9300, my temps went down 10c and I got far less fan action. I know this to be fact because I had two HP dv9500 identical the one with the T7500 ran about 25% hot then the T9300 and had more fan action running side by side.
