the hard drive quit. after 2 years. lucky, they are not that expensive anymore. I bought the same as the original from Amazon. After trying to install Win XP Pro, it gave me the message: no hard drive found.
Means, it does not have a partition, no format. The drive ( a Toshiba) did not come with a CD to do that. (WD usually has that utility). I did a Diagnose from the Bios, didn't work either.
Does anybody know what I have to do to make the maschine recognize the drive , how I can add a new partition onto it ?
    thank you.

hmmm.... I don't think that there is an issue with your new HD. The issue is Windows XP- well you see now, your BIOS is probably configured to use ACHI, which is a type of file transfer, but XP only supports IDE. Therefore if you want to install Windows XP onto that drive your going to have to either just change your BIOS into IDE instead of ACHI OR you can load the drivers in while "Windows Setup" (the blue screen) is loading.

    Thanks for the answer above.

    This made me think.
Boot from the Windows XP CD. Why is it not working?
Watch for a Press any key to boot from CD... This is the message you have to see!
It forces the computer to boot from the Windows CD. If you do not press a key, your PC will attempt to boot to the next device in the boot order, which is probably your hard drive. Since your hard drive has no operating system on it, the boot process will fail. Simple.

I had set the boot order in the bios to CD, Drive, etc...
That way, the CD started by itself to install XP. That was wrong.
I set the order to Drive, CD, etc ..., then it worked.
It asked me to press the key to start XP and the installation came to the correct point: create Partition, partition size, etc ...
As I remember, this way of new drive installation started with Windows 2000
