Hello,
Upon the very useful suggestions in this forum I would like to order a HP8510p. Concerning this I have 3 questions:
1) Warranty:
They write 3/3/0 - I suppose this means years, but I have no idea, what EXACTLY it means and i can't find it.![]()
Furthermore, I buy this machine in Austria, but i study in Canada, thus, is there worldwide warranty?
What should i take care of for the warranty?
2) Windows Vista:
I would need Vista Ultimate rather than Business. Is it definitely possible to use the Anytime Upgrader for the HP8510, even if i have no Vista CD? I read it costs 139 USD.
3) Weight:
I read this laptop weighs 2.8 kg, but on some retailer sites i read as much as 4.4 kg. Is that a mistake or is it really so heavy? I thought it was a "rather" lightweight one.
I would buy on some of those websites (stores in Austria):

Thank you very much!![]()

1) 3/3/0 means you'll have a 3-year warranty for parts and labor. 3/3/3 means parts, labor, and warranty service can be provided to you at your location. I'm not sure about 'worldwide' but I am fairly certain that it is a global warranty.
2) You can use the Anytime Upgrade DVD, but yes you do need to purchase a Vista Ultimate license or an upgrade from Business to Ultimate.
3) The 8510p is about 6lbs (US), which I believe is right around 2.9-3.0kg if I remember my conversions correctly. A 4.4kg machine would be more like one of the 17" models like the 8710p. -
ad 3.) Yes the weight is 2.8 kg
The 4.4 kg you see in the austrian stores is only the shipping weight (Versandgewicht), as in the whole package.
Why not buy it in Canada though? I d assume its actually cheaper there. -
Hello,
thank you so much for your answers!
ad 1.) How can i find out about the global warranty? I can't find that anywhere
ad 2.) Do i really need that DVD? I think there is an option in Windows and you can just do that from your computer or so. I don't entirely understand how it works and how much it will finally cost. Do you know more about that? -
Oh, i just noticed you are actually from Austria too, so i dont have to tell you what Versandgewicht means ...
Anyway, in the 'HP 8510p available!' thread is some discussion regarding the warranty. A link on HP sites i found when looking in that is here
Which, if i understand it correctly, means that your warranty is essentially global in that way that it changes globally to the countries warranty policy you stay in.
Which in the case of the 8510p is here in europe as well in canada and the US a 3 years. The only difference might be that its possibly not on site service everywhere, but only bring-in, depending on the local services.
If you really want to buy in austria, i can recommend www.vds-online.at
They seem not to have it in stock just yet, but they only list it when they actually have it. I bought my 8510w there and although the shop doesnt looks like much they have a good fast and friendly service. -
Hi Phoenix,
it's already not so common to meet someone Austrian abroad.....but in the Notebook Forum???? ;-)))))
And yes I perfectly DO understand Versandgewicht, only that i am a bit stupid and didnt see it ;-)).
So if i understand correctly with 3/3/0 I'll have the possibility to have warranty in Canada, Austria, US (among others) but i have to bring it to the service rather than having onsite warranty. Right?
Actually I had a look at geizhals.at and i'd like to choose a shop that looks rather reliable - that's also where i have those above websites from.
Btw, would you recommend HP8510w rather than p? I think i don't need too many CAD applications, so I stayed with the p, but who knows...
Thanks and send my greetings to my beloved home country! *sneef* -
hehe, we re not as bad as the germans but one can nearly find us everywhere too *grins*
Yup, the 3/3/0 effectively only misses the on site service as far i know.
Geizhals.at is where i looked too. Well its the best place to look for a decent shop around here.
I think p and w are very much comparable. The difference is only that FX 570 on the w is just a tad bit faster (it seems), its a certified workstation card (making it also more expensive), and that the w also offers the WUXGA (1920x1200) resolution.
I actually first wanted to buy exactly that one version of the p that you linked above. Its clearly the best bang for the buck from all versions offered here. The WSXGA+ resolution is a little bit easier on the eyes, and the display will also have slightly better viewing angles and a little bit more brightness than the WUXGA one.
I was looking to upgrade my old notebook since June already, was initially told the p would be available in July, and when a shop told me that the one i was looking for might only be available in late september/october i lost patience and got the w.
If you dont need a workstation card and have the p available, which it is now, or really want the WUXGA display then there isnt much of a reason to get the w if you ask me.
Greet the place des arts from me! Lovely place to enjoy the sunshine or the outdoor cinemas (hope they still do them in summer)
Now its sleep time here though .. -
HAHA i definitely prefer to meet an Austrian ;-))))))) Place des Arts is fine (havent been there for some weeks, hope it's still there). I think you refer to the film festival, it was just this month.
thanks a lot for your tips, i'll go ahead for the p! yibbieeeeeeh
i'll also solve my Vista ultimate issue somehow...i'll trust that that upgrade function works later.
have a good night.

Ask about HP's uf631e warranty which upgrades the warranty to on site service adn three year accidental damage protection at a very fair rate. Being worldwide, I suppose you could purchase it anywhere. I think you have thrity days to purchase it following your computer buy but I would check with HP directly if you won't be buying it together with your computer. FYI http://www.cdwg.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=1259106
Retail $135 US $105 if you shop around. Almost nothing for you given the strength of the dollar. -
I have taken a short look at HP Canada. Actually that Smart Buy version thats offered is a amazing deal.
A 8510p for just 1600 Ca$ , thats just a bit over 1100 , compared to the 1880 it costs here.
And the only difference is that it only has a T7300 CPU instead of a T7700. It has only 1GB Ram, but a 2nd 1GB Ram stick is easy to add, and only costs like 50.
So if you can buy it in canada, and dont need the very fastest cpu around then that would be a great deal.
For exactly this model there is also a new review here
But if you want the T7700, even the GR539AW is about a 100 cheaper in canada -
The Smart Buys are even cheaper in the US
-
add taxes also ;-)).
I ordered it today yibbieeeeh!
Thanks for all your great help!!!
