So I was reading the review of the new dv5 laptop and I noticed that the 3d mark score was around 1500 and the 3d mark score for dv6000t which is hwat I have with a geforce go 7400 is only like 600 or so. Does that mean the new Dv5 laptop is alot more powerful than my laptop even though the graphics are integrated??

Now I am confused. I assumed that a dedicated graphics card would be better for speed. What are the main variables involved when the integrated graphics is faster? Is this a CPU or RAM differential?

I belive its simply because the new integrated graphic cards from ATI (namely radeon 3200) is based on the radeon 2400...

It would not make sense to have a dedicated graphic card that is slower than a integrated one... its just that the radeon 3200 wasn't around when your geforce 7400 was released.

It's amazing what you can cram into a 55nm chip. Get the Radeon 3450 or other dedicated Radeon option with it and you'll use both GPUs in Hybrid Crossfire.

If I were to get the dv5z with the HD 3450, would the HD 3200 IGP also be included? Can I choose between them?

My apologies, since I have just read the review and am unknowledgeable with ATI's graphics.

As I understand it, when you get the HD 3450 dedicated card you also get the HD3200 chipset. What happens with hybrid crossfire is that you are using the 3450 card which is then boosted by the 3200 IGP giving you even more power. This is what happens when you are plugged up. When you are unplugged the HD 3450 is turned off and you are using only the 3200 in order to save on battery. This is my basic understanding. Someone correct me if I am wrong. Good luck and happy computing!

That is my understanding as well. Both video cards show on the device manager.

Here is a screenshot from a new Gateway desktop with CrossFireX technology:

okay let me get this straight cause now its a bit more clear to me.

the 3200 is integrated and the 3450 is dedicated. The 3200 integrated is already impressive becuase it outperforms my geforce go 7400 (i know it sucks now but at the time it was one of the better ones) but if u choose the 3450 dedicated card ull have the power of the integrated combined with it which will be really powerful and if ur unplugged you will have the power of the IGP which is still impressive

im wondering how much better the 3450 is in crossfire with the 3200 compared to the 3450 alone?

For those of you interested in the Hybrid Crossfire performance, here's some benchmark for the desktop version. Judging from the 3DMARK06 scores for the individual HD3200 and H3450, the notebook counterparts should have similar performance.

    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...t,1785-10.html

For those of you too lazy to read through the entire article, here's the conclusion.

"When the integrated HD3200 graphics unit is paired with a dedicated Radeon HD3450 to create a Crossfire configuration, graphics performance improved by an average of 65% across the benchmarks. Every single game in our test suite showed gains, ranging from 55% to 87%."

I'm curious with what specs you got, MightyJD. I have the Sony FZ470 on my list as well, and the price is pretty close to the dv5z spec'd out (HD 3450, 160GB, WSXGA+, Blu ray drive vs 8400M GT, 300GB 4200rpm, WXGA, Blu ray) factoring in HP shipping and tax.

JD - be interesting to see YOUR take on the machine, including 3D Mark06 benchies, if'n ya wouldn;t mind...

    As to the others...

I thought I had read, that when you are mobile on battery, it uses the integrated Radeon 3200, and when you run on external power, you can use both the integrated 3200, and the discrete 3450 in Hybrid Crossfire.

At least, that is the understanding I have...
I do not know, however, if using H-CX is an option on battery, like FORCING the 3450 to work in H-CX while on battery.

I'm sure someone will come up with a hack, anyway!

I created an official dv5z owners lounge here.
