    Hello,

This is my laptop: Compaq Presario 2500

Recently my laptop hard drive has been making popping noises that, after some research, i believe to be the read/write heads so i've decided that while my laptop is still functional I'd like to find out how and with what i can replace the hard drive.

I've already backed up my information and what i need to know is what type of specifcations do i need to be looking for on my new hard drive.

I'm not really big on hard disk lingo but i know my way around a computer.

I believe these are the required features:

    ATA/100 connection
UltraDMA 4200rpm (does this even matter)

Basically I need to know if i'm going to search for a new HDD do i just need to find one that says "ATA/100 internal laptop drive" on the box or is there something more that i'm missing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes you should be looking for a 2.5"(form factor- do not get 3.5" or it wont fit) ATA-6 or Ultra ATA/100. UDMA/100 refers to the Transfer modes.

If your laptop is still under warrenty try to call HP and they will send you a new one. Also make sure you back up all your inportant info before the HD dies

    Thanks for the information!

Sadly my extended insurance ran out a few months ago but at least i got my monies worth outta it: A new screen and a new motherboard.

It's strange my computer is a compaq on the outside but when it boots it shows a HP logo.

I've already backed up my data, its the first thing i did when i heard to noises :)
