I have an HP-dv2000 laptop hard-drive that's completely crashed now.

I have a Dell XPS laptop 320gig Sata Hard drive that I am trying to replace it with, however when I plug the hard drive in and try to turn on the power. All that happens is all the lights on the laptop just blink really fast, along with the multimedia quick buttons, continuously.

If I remove the hard-drive and it will actually go away and start, it will start up the HP screen thats it.

    Is the Hard-Drive dead?

Thanks! Glad to join here, hope there's lots of help including me installing another hard-drive if so.

Could be, but a bad hard drive shouldn't cause the sort of problems you are describing, especially before it the bios has posted. Can you confirm that this problem is caused only by this hard drive by hooking up another working drive to it?

The thing is the screen doesn't even turn on, the lights on the multimedia and such just rapidly blink.

Well if I plug in the old hard-drive, this doesn't happen and it will load up normally. Then I get a command saying that it has detected the hard-drive instability and that I sure run a check in BIOS or ignore which will load up windows then it will freeze. (bad hard-drive as told by the comp)

When I place the hard-drive from the dell in there (also has me to slide over the plastic piece over the sata power/data thing to connect) the blinking just occurs and laptop doesn't turn on. I lightly shook the hard-drive and i hear a small rattle, shook the old one, no rattle...broken?

So I think it may be the hard drive I just want to be really sure before I go out and buy a hard-drive.

Well if its making a rattling sound that's really bad. The read/write heads may have come unaligned but for it to rattle a lot, there may be more damage that may have occurred. If you manage to get into the bios with it disconnected then your motherboard is probably fine and its just the hard drive. I've just never heard of hard drive stopping a bios POST.

Regardless of whether the hard drive is causing the computer not to boot, the rattling sound it not a good sign, so I would recommend getting a new drive.

    Must be broken I guess.

Maybe try updating the BIOS, probably wont help but it couldn't hurt.

THANKS!! For the help and very fast too, I am going to try and purchase a new hard-drive tomorrow.

Also would either of you know why my fan would sometimes be making a loud noise? I am thinking about taking it completely apart tomorrow...thinking some stuck hair, dust or something?

Yah chances are your vents are blocked, try using compressed air to clean them first before opening, that way if it works you can save yourself time of not having to put it back together.
