    Hi,
Was planning to upgrade HDD on my DV6T 2300 quad edition pavalion but the attachment of the drive in the bay is quiet different from what the manuals say or how various you tube videos for upgrading show.

Mine is a sata 320gb hitachi drive, how ever the sata connecter then connects via a long cloth covered cable that at its end fans out in the form of 4 separate points soldered to the lower part of a capacitor like thing on the motherboard.

The capacitor like point has a brownish ribbon like plastic band around it like a bow-tie(same thing like the brown plastic sheet covering the drive).Does any one know what the bow tie like thing is for?(seal of warranty,ESd protection or something else?).
My problem is that although i can disconnect the sata connecter to change the drive, the soldered points look quite fragile and not reassuring ,when all manuals and videos show that all one has to do is remove screws and slide the drive in the caddy to the left & pick it up to remove,(no cables involved)? Get the feeling that the soldered points may give way or come of with a sudden jerk while dis-connecting the sata connection.

So can any one tell whether such an attachment is usual or an exception and what the hell that bow-tie thing is for?
    Thanks in advance.

    Do you have any pics?

This sounds very cheap compared to the atypical stationary mounted connector, if I'm picturing it correctly.......

    Yeah,
dont hav pics right now but i'll try to upload when possible.
But its quiet weird, the sata connector pins aren't fixed but connect to the mother board via a cable. When i lift off the drive the sata connector comes out with the drive & i can put the whole thing still connected to the board outside.
I,ll post pics soon, any specific site which wud be fine(havent done it before).

You could upload them to the board as an attachment if the file size is under 585.9 KB.

OK ,seems like i am confused, the manual does show a cable from the sata connector to the board and talks about removing that from the board which seems like a harder task as compared to just dislodging it from the connector it self.may be I have interpreted the whole thing incorrectly.Attached are pics from the manual, but cant see how we can remove cable from the board itself. That's what probably triggered doubts in my mind.Still no video I have seen has such an arrangement. What about you?
I guess I'll just disconnect it fro the connector site and not from the cable from the board.
Any suggestions & many thanks for taking interest and all the help.

Pics appear better when opened in a new window.

What is part #1 labeled as?

It looks as if the hard drive adapter is hooked directly to a cable, where previously it dropped into a fixed socket. Very strange......

Part 1 is labelled as "Hard Drive Connector Cable".
Personally i feel this arrangement is more likely to get damaged during drive replacement.
No cable would have been sturdier and as far as i know the usual arrangement. Why choose such an assembly in a quad core laptop is baffling.
Besides the thing is not even a plugin or socket kind of attachment at the board,u can actually see the solderings at that point.i feel the plastic covering over it is a warranty seal or something.May be u can actually remove that attachment from the board. If so that seal is likely to be broken voiding warranty.Cant figure out any other explanation for it.I am asking this because initially I had attempte to remove the cable from that attachment & in the process one leaf of that covering came off.Well happens.

I don't get the reasoning either and I wonder if the whole line is now like this.

The only thing that holds everything down now is the drive cage, correct?

Well thing dont end there.Nothing fixes the drive to the chassis. All one has to do is put the drive back in its bay and put the plastic drive cover and tighten the #2 cover screws. U dont screw the drive in at the backet rails. So all thats holding the drive on the motherboard is the outer plastic case cover on the under suface of the laptop .

I would love to know the engineering reason behind this, unless it was just to save $5.

May be Gen 2 DV6s even quad core ones are not worthy of a good build quality any more.May be HP has moved beyond this line to focus on more premium products.Gen3,SE & Envy's.

Either that, or the newer models are the same.
