I just did what many have and got a 7,200rpm 60GB hard drive. I won't be installing it in my computer until this weekend because I need to time get my data off the current drive. I already have a external case for the 5,400rpm drive in my notebook so I thought I'd put the 7,200rpm in there just to test it out. It spins up and everything but I can't see it in my computer. When I go to device manger both drives are listed but both have the same location 0 is this the problem? Do I need to set a jumper to fix this?

You need to partition and format the drive before you can see it. WinXP will do that for you when you install it. See Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Computer Management if you want to format the drive.

I will try that thank you, while on the subject do you think its worth installing Windows XP Pro instead of Home? My notebook came with Home but I have a copy of Pro I can use for my reinstall on Friday when I put in my new drive. Also when I install windows what is the benifit of making a partition of like 4-6GB's to install windows into? I work with databases at work and the machine this installed this way but I don't see the benifit. Is it just preference?

Windows XP home is fine for most users. The exception is when you need to add your laptop to a domain or you if you have some higher end requirements like running Virtual PC or IIS. There are more differences, I'd do a Google to find them.

There were/are reasons that mandated hard drives be partitioned, but those are mainly on servers. Its a matter of personal preference on your laptop.

I run XP Pro and leave my disk unpartitioned.

thanks for your input, I think I will not partition if there's not benifit. I'm still thinking about which version though, the notebook software came with Home but I have a upgrade I can use, so I don't really see how it can hurt. I do like to have all the features I can, I may try to use the terminal services, I think that would be nice, if its no to tough to use from other locations I mean. I have high speed cable
