Just received a box to send my dv9543cl back to HP in the "bay area". I have read on this site that it is advised to remove the hard drives before sending the laptop back to HP for repair. Is this correct?

Depends on the type of repair, HP might reject the repair because "Drive was not found" but on the other hand they are also known for formatting drives for no good reason. If possible, I would backup all the documents and files then just send it in and hope it comes back fixed... =\ (personally hate hp repairs)

I had in early post some say don't send it others say it voids the warranty. Someone also mentioned to contact HP and advise them of the need to send it in and let then know you have sensutive financial info on the drive and wanted to remove it. One also said due to damage some of the repair techs have done to peoples systems to take detail pictures and a newspaper included in one of the pics to show the date etc so if it gets damaged you can go to small claims court but odds are they would settle long before that and to include the pics with the repairs so the tech knows you have detail pics so they can not say you did the damage.

The only way to garontee that they won't erase your hard drive is to not send it in. You can probably get away with removing the drive before sending it in, unless it's the hardrive itself that is causing your problem. Hard drives are considered "user serviceable parts" which means that you won't void your warentee by taking it out of your laptop. I have sent it out for repair with and without the hard drive, but i never recieved my hard drive back when i sent it out before, so allways make an image of your drive first.
