I had owned an HP dv9260nr laptop since July 2007. I had a lot of issues but the straw that broke the Camels back started happening Nov 2007. Everytime something electrical was going on in the computer, I would get a crackling (electrical static type sound) come through the speakers. It was so bad, the only way I could use the laptop was to turn the speakers down all the way. I did everything I could, drivers, re-installed Vista Ultimate 64 bit. Finally I sent it to HP. They were able to reproduce the problem and replaced the main board and main HDD. It worked fine for about a week and then it started again.

I was able to get HP to replace it with a dv9700t (Vista Home Premium 32 bit)which I received on Friday, 3/28/08. I spent the weekend putting all the software back in and about got sick to my stomach when this one started doing the same thing, although no where near as bad. It seems to be more prevelant on battery. I tried a second HP battery I have but no change. With the battery out and on AC only it doesn't seem to be there athough that hadn't made a difference on my original 9260. I have done the battery out, hold down power key thing but to no avail.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?
    Thanks, Don

just finished testing the sound out and no crackling sound here either. did you check eq settings, realtek settings, windows sound settings, sound profiles, cell phones sitting next to computer (mainly nextel or boost mobile)?

and you said it started about half way through your installs, so maybe one of the programs your installing is corrupting the mixer...

I have a very dry house and live in the Northeast. It's a log home and the logs just soak up all the moisture even with two large humidifiers running. I have had a suspicion that the dryness 25 - 35% may be affecting the laptop with a static problem. What still leaves a bit of dought in my mind regarding that senario is that I had a Gateway laptop for two years and didn't have that problem at all. I noticed last night with the battery installed and hooked up to AC power, that I wasn't getting the periodic popping in the speakers. Keeping my fingers crossed. Next time I'll go on battery only and see if I get it. If there is a static problem, it makes sense to be less noticable on AC power as the receptical and plug are grounded. Believe me when I say I did EVERYTHING imaginable with my original dv9260nr to try and determing what the issue was. I had purchased it in July 07 and didn't start hearing the speaker issue until Nov 07, about the time it starts to get real low winter humidity levels. Also I had had a number of other issues with it, 2 HD DVD drives, Vista reinstalls 3 times, Replaced the main HDD as it got real noisy.

hey anderde, i just got a dv9700t and im also experiencing the same issue only when im using my battery..i havent tried to find a solution but it only occurs when my speakers dont produce any sound..for example if i leave my comp idle for probly 20 secs and click anything that has a system sound that static pop occurs but no sound is produced but when i click it again the sound is now played. today i tested the speakers on speaker setup and when i clicked on either the left or right speakers it gave me an error saying "failed to play test tone" followed by the pop, i clicked it again and it started producing the sound. i dont know what the problem is but the pop isnt loud and annoying so i guess it doesnt bother me at all but i just wanted to let you know that you're not alone. if you do find a solution though, please tell me. Thanks.

I have a similar problem with my dv6500t. After updating it to Vista SP1 I started to hear a low electronic 'pop' sound from the speakers when clicking on web pages or opening windows. It only happens when running on the battery.

I installed SP1 via Windows Update. Since it was available I assume I did not have any of the ‘bad’ drivers. After the popping sound started I attempted to update the Realtek sound driver but it didn't go well so I used system restore to undo it. My current Realtek driver is 6.0.1.5384. I tried to update to 6.0.1.5494 with SP37743. I followed the preferred 'install now' instructions. The first thing it did was uninstall my current driver. Then a system reboot. When the system restarted a new driver was installed. I checked the driver in Device Manager and it had a 2006 date and a lower number than the driver it replaced.

Did anyone’s notebook come with SP1 preinstalled? What Realtek sound driver does it have?

My replacement dv9700t came with SP1 (Vista Home Premium 32, I downgraded from Ultimate 64) and I still get the popping. The difference between my original dv9260nr and my replacement laptop was that the popping was so often and so loud, I couldn't turn the speaker up at all. That was the final straw and HP replaced it with the dv9700t. The other difference was that the 9260 did it with the AC adapter (but not as much or loud) and when using just the battery but worse. I was doing some work last night on battery and ocassionally got a pop but not bad. The other thing I have started doing is not leaving the laptop plugged in when not in use. I don't know what audio driver I have, I'll look tonight.
I'm glad (but not so happy to hear) that other people are experiencing my issue. That means it's not just me.

I read this thread about a week ago and thought, "How strange" but my DV9700T isn't doing that.

    Well, well, well.

It just got back from repairs 2 days ago and I'm sitting here on battery power for the first time since it got back and pop! I thought my stomach was growling at first because I was trying to figure out what the noise was. In the very back of that tiny file cabinet in my head, I remembered someone had a post about this but couldn't remember the specifics. Yep, it was your post and it's the exact same thing that's happening to you.

I'm even on a clean install of Vista, all updates are installed but I don't have any of my programs installed at all.

In the time I've typed this, it's not done it but it does seem to be when I'm running idle and just reading a Web page. Very periodic.

I would guess it is the soundcard. Maybe see if there is A. a "HP" updated driver. Or see who makes the soundcard (Realtek, Conexext, etc....), and see if there is a driver they provide. HP almost always does not have the latest driver, for well anything.

What version of the Realtek audio driver does HP use with laptops that come with SP1 preinstalled?

This is the driver that came with the Realtek High Definition audio and SP1 pre installed on my computer, 6.0.1.5494, dated 10/9/07... I have been fighting this issue on two dv9000 series computers, the first dv9260nr was replaced because it was so bad and is wasn't SP1. I'm pretty computer savy havin'g built a few but nothing seems to get rid of the periodic POP from the speakers. You're also correct, most of the drivers on my replacement notebook are more recent than the ones on the HP site. I don't dare trust the ones on the site.
