My mother was having some trouble with her laptop, and I was wondering if you guys had an idea of what the problem could be. Basically, it won't turn on, even with the battery plugged into the wall. It is completely unresponsive. The last time she used it was last night, and she said that when she was done, she left it on with the screen down and the battery plugged in.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Check the easiest things first. Is the battery charger plugged into a working outlet? Is the light around the power plug on the laptop illuminated?

Just checked those things. I tried it on an outlet I know works and that didn't solve it. The light around the power plug on the laptop does not illuminate when everything is hooked up.

Try unplugging it, taking the battery out, and then plugging it back in to the outlet to see if it will boot up off of AC power only.

If you have a voltmeter I would check the voltage at the center pin of the battery charger plug to the outside shell. If the light is not lit,the charger may be bad, and the battery has run down so the laptop has no power to turn on.

You may be able to take the laptop to your local store and see if they would let you plug in a charger from one of their demo units on display. Or if they have a repair center they may check the charger for you free if they think you will buy a new one of it is defective. It wouldn't take 30 seconds to check the charger.

Actually if it were me, I would just go down to my local coffee shop and ask one of the patrons if I could try their charger. There are always HP owners around.
