Hi:
i have a hp pavillion dv6500t with nvidia 8400m gs graphics card.
my tv is a sony 57" projection hdtv.
i'm using an hdmi to dvi cable to connect my laptop to the tv.
the picture quality is great, everything looks fine except for the fact that there is an annoying overscan problem; therefore i cannot see the sidebar or or the windows taskbar.
i tried updating the nvidia driver, using powerstrip... etc
there seems to be no way to underscan!!
does anyone seem to have the solution to this problem?

I do not have your notebook but I have same issue with my MCE 2005 desktop connecting to Sony 60" LCD rear projection TV via DVI cable. My procedure may not be the same as yours:
1) Right click desktop, select NVIDIA Control Panel or equivalent.
2) Under Change Resolution, you may see "Select the display you would like to change". Select a monitor other than laptop display.
3) Choose resolution. In my MCE 2005, there is a selection called "Treat Digital Display as HDTV", I enable this.
3) Also in MCE 2005, there is a selection called "Select TV format" which prompts you to select 480p, 720p, 1080i and possibly 1080p. Select appropriate for your TV. There is an "Advance" selection to adjust compensation.
Bottom line, the NVIDIA control panel shows many options you can select or change.
I hope the above procedure is similar to your laptop. My laptop is dv2620us which has VGA output and it's cannot be connected to my TV because TV does not have VGA input. It has DVI input (TV is 4 years old).
Good luck. -
I had this problem also, try adjusting you TV's aspect ratio , mine was on 16:9 when I had this problem then I put it on Just Scan and it fixed it (I have a samsung though not sure if the sony has this option).
If you TV can't do this, right click on you desktop go to Nvidia control panel, Video and Television, then resize HDTV desktop. this will allow you to resize your desktop to fit you screen.
