OK, this has been driving me insane. Yesterday, while listening to music, I had headphones plugged in to headphone jack # 2, I then unplugged it and plugged it into jack # 1 and a friend plugged their headphones into jack # 2. As soon as I did this the headphone jacks stopped working. The internal speakers still work, but when I plug headphones/ speakers into a jack the sound still comes out of the internal speakers and nothing from the headphones. I have tried several different headphones and external speakers to confirm this is a computer issue.

Since then, i have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, have tried three different drivers along with uninstalling and reinstalling both the conexant modem drivers along with the audio driver and still nothing. Its also worth mentioning that the red light in jack #2 still flashes when something is plugged into it.

That's awkward. I'd contact HP, and see if they can replace the audio jacks.

Well I would have contacted HP but the notebook is about 8 months out of warranty , so that's the very last resort.

Any chance that this is a software issue.

I'm having a hard time believing this is a hardware issue, I didn't even move the computer, just unplugged one headphone, plugged two in and that was it.

It might have messed something up in the wiring or something (not exactly technical terms ) but if you've done all that to no avail...

Hey, can you run a diagnostic of some sort to see if they work? I know Dell has diagnostic tests you can run to determine if it's a problem within your OS.

I've had this happen, but restarting cleared it up. Have you checked out your Sound and Audio Driver Properties? One of the settings is messed up, I just can't remember where it is.

It might be under Sound in Control Panel. There are some advanced settings under there that screw things up.

I checked the control panel and under sound and audio devices but there isn't much of anything there. but if i go to the device manager, right click on "Conexant High Definition Audio", click properties then properties again, there's a list. Under "Audio Devices" when i select Conexant again I can select to use or not to use audio features and also "Do not map through this device" any idea on what the latter would do?

Also I have confirmed that the line in/ microphone port works and when I plug in headphones I can hear a "pop" (through the headphones) so there is some voltage across the ports.

highly unlikely the video drivers would do anything to the sound

what OS are you using? this problem usually happens to XP users

this happened to me in vista x64 after i noticed the sound comming from the speakers was really crappy. i tried updating drivers, and after i did, vista kept saying "no audio output device detected". then i uninstalled the driver, rebooted and vista installed some random driver. i had to clean install and install newest drivers for it to work again.

ohh if you have XP then you will definately loose that headphone jack function due to drivers.

Its a known issue for using XP, either headphone jack and/or mic function is lost

i have faced similar problem .
i have dv2601 tu with vista and xp installed
the problem is due to sound drivers.
i can give you the driver but if you want headphone working then you lost microphone.(temporarily).again if you install other sound driver then you get microphone facility but loose headphone.

    two diiferent drivers.
in one headphone working mic not working
in second mic wprking headphone not working.

just to clarify, i never had vista, bought the computer before vista was released.

munu1985, if you can tell me which driver you have that enabled the headphones or direct me to where you found it, it would be great.

thanks munu, however it didn't fix the problem. I'm just going to reinstall windows this weekend (I have an occasional boot-up error that I want fixed anyways).

Also, if anyone trying to install this gets a "media device not found" error, you need to add your device to the .inf file under the [conexant] heading.

    for example, I added this:
    %HdAudioFunctionDriver. venice 5045.DeviceDesc% = HdAudModel, HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_14F1&DEV_5045&SUBSYS_103C30BB ;

The underlined portion is from the device manager "hardware id" and the bold part required some googling, it's a name conexant uses to label the part. Mine is a "venice" part, the one that this driver covers specifically is waikiki. The other parts of the entry were copied from the existing entries.

you can install soung driver by double click on exe file
    you have to do manually.
install microsoft UAA(universional audio archtecturte)(for clean format xp)
if you already install it left that process.
uninstall the sound driver if you have already (else left this process)
    then restart pc
after restart system message new hardware found.
    then go to device manager
choose sound card option (yellow question mark)
    then right click on it
    click update driver
then choose 2nd option(install from alist of specific location)
    then select 2nd option(do n't search i will choose...)
    then click next
    then click on conexant audio
    then click have a disk
locate the driver folder (what i have provided extraxt it using 7 zip)
then you can see a ini file select that a warning message appear (driver not digitaly signed)ignore that then click install after few time the process is complete .
with this driver your headphone jack must work but not microphone

    ========================
    note

i think you are installing xp in hp pavillion laptop for first time
because you can not install sound drivers by double or executing the exe file
in all time you have to do manually.

there are so many atleast 3 type of sound drivers i have installed
but each have some merit and demerit.
but in all install your internal speaker works
but headphone and mic are not working properly.
in one when you plug in headphone the sound is coming from internal speaker as well as from headphone
in one you selcect sound high to mic volume from open volume control you hear a very annoying lound sound from internal speaker which can only stop by mute the mic volume from volume control panel.

    well don't mind for this

still not working, I'm going to reinstall windows; its possible that it is an error within windows rather than the driver, so that's what I'm hoping for, if not than I guess I'll have call HP

well, just reinstalled windows. good news: its faster and no boot problem (yeah); bad news: the situation with my headphone jacks is still the same.
Which, I believe, is good enough proof that this is hardware related.

So my options are: to send it to HP, fix it myself, or buy an external sound card.
I'm leaning to the third option. Sending it to HP is going to cost a couple hundred dollars (I'm assuming), and I'm more likely to break it further rather than fix it.

So does anyone have a suggestion for a usb sound card. I saw one small solution (made by turtle beach) that is more like a sound dongle rather than a sound card and cost around $30, but this seemed a bit hit or miss; I also saw the creative xmod which looked promising, did everything I would need it to do plus and cost around $80.
