So in preparation for Star Wars: The Old Republic, I have been getting back into computer gaming and decided to start with Counter Strike: Source and Day of Defeat: Source. Then I was like "Hey, I have a headset, I'll use that since I will be using it with SWTOR." I plugged it in (Starting from the port closest to me, black, then red cord) and absolutely nothing registering through the mic. I get sound through the headphones fine, but nothing out of the mic. I then went to my desktop and opened up recording devices in control panel and it would not register there either. Same thing goes for the Beats Control Panel. So, my question is: Does anyone have any idea why the mic would not be picking up? I have tried it on my other computer and it works fine.

    Thanks

I've had sound issues too, just not the same problems. It's probably Windows 7 going bonkers on you. Windows 7 randomly changed my settings for some reason, so I had to change them back.

Right click on the volume icon in the toolbar. Fiddle around with Playback devices, Recording devices, Sounds, and Volume Control options.

Are you using the converter that goes from combo headset/mic -> separate headset/mic?

Edit: It looks like you're not using a converter.

Well, what sucks is that you have to. The "mic" port on the Envy 14 is a combo headset port that has 4 pins. You need something like this to fix it: http://www.theheadsetbuddy.com/PC-Computer-Headset-to-35mm-Smartphone-Adapter-01-PC35-PH35.htm

There used to be a cheaper one on amazon, but it's currently unavailable. I bet if you look around you can find one that does the same thing for less.

That, or a sound card that has microphone port and regular stereo sound output port.

Oh yeah Eafd is right. The mic port is actually a combo headphones/microphone port like the Apple macbook pros. So you need to buy an adapter that splits that combo port into 2 ports.

I've also seen those adapters on Amazon. Very cheap to get.

If that is the case, why are there two ports? One labeled headphone and one with a headset. I mean, one would assume it would work fine.

The headset is meant for headsets with a combined mic/audio connector, and can't be used with just a mic.

That is flipping stupid. Is there not a way to override the port or change the way it is set up?

You could take the computer apart and lift the output pin on the 3rd audio contact from the USB/sound board. But besides that, no.

Edit: I thought about it some more, and realized that even if you did that it wouldn't be possible. You'd have to rewire the socket completely, to make pins 1 and 2 from the mic connect to pin 4 of the computer and ground to pin 3.

With the way the 4 pin port is set up, It's impossible to have a stereo mic connected to the computer.

Last edit: The way the Envy determines what to do with the combo port is by testing the 3rd and 4th pins. If the pins are shorted, then the Envy assumes it's an output plug, because standard 3.5mm audio jacks have a large ground sleeve that connects the 3rd and 4th pins of the Envy together. So if you have a standard mic connector with 3 pins, the 3 pins are identical in size and functionality to an output audio cable. The Envy can't detect the difference by testing the 3rd and 4th pins, so it sees the 3rd and 4th pins are shorted and treats the mic cable as a normal audio out cable.
