Hi everyone. New to this forum and HP laptops. I'm generally more familiar with Dells, Sony Vaios and Macs. I'm not afraid to tinker with a laptop and modify hardware or software.

I'm looking to buy an HP Pavilion DV7-4000 series notebook. More specifically, I'm interested in the DV7-4065dx. I want to turn this into a linux rig for long term use and periodic distro hoping. I haven't decided whether i want to dual boot with windows, but if i do, I'd like to do it on separate hard drives.

I've seen conflicting references online regarding the HP Pavilion DV7-4000 series, most referring to only a single hard drive, while others saying that they come with two (or at least a second connection for a secondary).

I've been reading through the manual, and on pages #49-51 (actual pages 59-61), they clearly state that there are two hard drives. You can see the manual here:

    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02642701.pdf

What I'm not seeing anywhere is a reference to the specific model I'm interested in or which models come with 2 HDs and which don't.

Can anyone who knows tell me for sure exactly what the set up is on this model line (or on the specific model I'm interested in)?

On a separate note, I keep on reading reviews about this rig saying that it runs a bit warm and is prone to blue screens, caused by insufficient ram. Easily solved, but I figured I'd ask from input from the community on any quirks worth looking out for on this rig.

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer.

BTW, This is the rig in question:

and here is a view of the hard drive bay:

I'm asking about the rectangular space just left of the one identified as the hard drive, which the manual seems to identify as a secondary hard drive.

The Chassis is capable of holding 2 hard drives this has been the case for quite awhile (my dv7-3079) came with dual drives. But Not all models come with two drives and there are several postings in this forum about what you need in order to add a second drive (basically I believe it's a caddy, cable, and screws). Hope this helps.

that IS a 6000, NOT a 4000 (or 5000 to be accurate) series

That looks IDENTICAL to my dv7 4295us and yes there is a slot for a second drive and as was posted above you need the caddy and cable.
