Hi guys i recently just bought a new TV and HDMI cable and tried to connect them up but nothing comes up on my TV. My notebook detects that there is another display but nothing happens even when i switch to duplicate screen. I am on ATI graphics. I tried it at a friend's place and it worked with his cable and TV. Do you think the problem lies with my cable? Thanks!

Edit: My ATI Driver Versions are listed below

    Driver Packaging Version 8.771.1-100909a-105617C-HP

So You've tested it with Your cable and Your TV (doesn't work) and friend's cable and TV (works), huh? Why not test it with:

    1) Friend's cable and Your TV
    2) Your cable and friend's TV?

1st case works, 2nd doesn't - something wrong with your TV.
2nd case works, 1st doesn't something wrong with your cable.

Haven't You come up with that idea?

yeah I was going to do that. But i was wondering if there was anything wrong with my ATI Driver version?

PS. When I plugged in at my friend's place with his cable, sound came out from my notebook instead of the TV speakers.

you can fix the sound from the notebook thing in the idt/beats control panel.

when hdmi is plugged in you can set the hdmi audio as the default. Do that (it'll only be the default while hdmi is plugged in, otherwise the last option will be the default)

The easiest way to find out what's wrong is by doing what I recommended. Why should we guess, if we could very easily have hard evidence? :) It could be the HDMI cable or TV.

Alright guys i figured out that the problem lies with the HDMI cable. I brought my TV, computer and HDMI cable into the bestbuy store today to try out an expensive HDMI cables and it worked fine. Ended up buying a monster cable instead..

Moral of the story: Don't believe it when people say HDMI cables are the same. THEY ARE NOT. There is a reason why some cables are priced at $100 and others at $5, and it's not solely because you are paying for the branding.

I definitely don't recommend buying the cables from amazon seller below as the return shipping and your time to troubleshoot it. It just isn't worth it anymore..

Once again, thanks a lot warnec and MagnusDraco for the help.

    PS. repped you guys.

well yeah. If you're going like 100+ feet the monster cable will work still.

in general the cheap cables work fine.

you just got a bad one though.

I've used 3-4 of those cheap hdmi cables from monoprice and none of them had problems.

Actually, reviews seem to indicate that there is almost no difference in cable quality, unless you're going over large distances (25ft+). It seems you just got a bad cable, which can happen no matter who you buy from.

Yea I have a monster cable (~$60) that I use for my computer and I needed one for the PS3 at home and I bought one from amazon for no more than $3.00 shipped and works the same. My eyes dont see a difference in picture quality. The only difference is that the monster cable got some blue metal covering along the entire wire and is thicker and seriously harder to bend which sucks.

Yeah well I bought 2 of them (10ft each) from the same seller and both gave me the same problem. It may be a batch problem. I'm emailing the guy from amazon now and see what he can do about it..

The 6.5ft monster cable costs $80(!) but at least it finally works.. The 5hours I spent troubleshooting over the phone with both HP and the TV manufacturer was just too much to handle :(

Why don't you return the monster cable, and just buy a different inexpensive cable off Amazon? Seems like that would make sense if you thought it was just a problem with that batch of cables.

Yeah thanks! I'm contacting the seller now and see if he can ship (takes around 11days) another working cable before the 30days are up.. But I'm a still little worried buying cables online now, since I would have to bear the return shipping costs even if he ships me a defected piece.. Which is kind of stupid since I'm technically paying for something which isn't exactly my fault..
