I bought a Compaq Presario Notebook around Christmas to be used for school. I upgraded it when I bought it to a Pentium Dual Core Processor, and 1GB memory. It came with Windows Vista Home Premium - which I hate hate !!!
I bought a Labtec optical mini color mouse to use in place of the touch pad/pointer. But, to my surprise, when I plugged it into the USB port (that I had already used for an external backup drive) nothing happened! I took it back to where I bought it, but, the mouse worked on their notebook - so, I had to bring it home. I tried looking thru the user guide, thinking there was a default that had to be switched. I did notice that my device panels for the Pen and Mouse, and Touchpad were different than what the instructions were telling me to do. I ended up contacting HP support - but, that was a waste of time. He ended up telling me to download this fix for the intel chip: http://downloadmirror.intel.com/df-support/12150/a08/infinst_autol.exe

and wanted me to disable my touch pad pointer. I am not tech savvy, but I didn't think that was a good idea. So, I only downloaded the fix, which has made things worse. I can not zero in on text or a link within a paragraph now. When I do, it disappears all together. I can restore back to before I did the download, but I still need help with getting my external mouse to work. Any ideas? Is it a Vista problem? Thanks.... :)

It should be 100% compatible with a USB Mouse. Vista doesnt even support the old style PS2 anymore only USB. Make sure your USB port is working fine and nothing obstructing the usb connectors

Ive had instances like that in the office before, sometimes a mouse will work on one computer and not the other. Its really weird cause the mouse laser light will go on for a few seconds then turn off again.

Try exchange it for a different brand mouse
