    Hi all,

I was hoping folks who may have had similar experiences or are more savvy in these matters can help me fix a problem with my HP Pavilion dv5000 laptop.

A couple days ago, I shut off my computer and something very strange happened on restart. When it turned back on, the monitor was all screwy:

The whole right side of the screen was solid black, as if that portion of the monitor didn't exist anymore. The top left portion of the monitor was my regular desktop, but shrunk down to fit in a smaller space. Strangest of all, the bottom right corner of the laptop was "cloning" the top of left section of the desktop, as if I had installed dual monitors on the same screen (because the bottom right section was much smaller than the top left section, only a portion of the screen was being cloned).

I know this is hard to understand, so I took a picture of the screen itself so you can see what it looks like. I've also made a drawing duplicating what the screen now looks like. These are at the bottom of the post.

    Any ideas for a fix???
I've tried reinstalling the Video Driver, no change.
I went under display settings to adjust the resolution, but the resolution is stuck at 800x600 and won't budge. Under Hardware manager, the Monitor reads as "Digital Flat Monitor 800x600." I can't find a "Monitor" driver on the HP website, all I see under Display drivers are video card drivers. Installing those and running them didn't fix anything.
I tried hooking up an external monitor to the laptop. On the external monitor, the screen came out fine, leading me to believe there is a problem with the monitor software/hardware.

When you installed the drivers, did you uninstall, then reinstall the new ones? Have you tried the ones from the HP website and the ones from the Windows Update? If both don't work, try using system restore and restore it to a date where the problem didn't exist. Just wondering, did you drop your laptop recently or do any damage to it?

no damage was done, no drops, I didn't uninstall any drivers but reinstalled the ones from HP just in case and still the same issue. I also did a system restore, but again no luck.

even when I load from the BIOS I have the same problem. I even did a complete windows reinstall and again no luck... me thinks the monitor hardware is bad??
