Help! My laptop got wet!

I accidentally spilled a drink over my laptop that was at that time turned off. Now the battery led is constantly on in orange colour. So i removed the battery and connected the laptop directly to charger and the same thing happens!

What's wrong with it? I didn't turn the laptop since and never tried.

 

Even though you might have let the water dry, there are minerals that are inside the water. Once the water dries, the minerals will still be there and can cause the internal parts to corrode and not work. Also, you have to remember that there is still electricity in the laptop even when it is turned off. The only way there won't be, is if you remove the CMOS battery, remove the power adapter, remove the battery, and hold down the power button for 10 seconds or so. I don't know the exact reason why the LED is orange, but does the laptop even work or does it not even power on?

Did you buy the accidental coverage warranty when you purchased the laptop?

 

if you spilled water in it while it was on, then chances are your laptops motherboard is fried. Furthermore, if you plugged it in before it dried out, then you still fried your motherboard. IF your laptop is less than a year old, id suggest that you buy the accidental warrenty of HP's website then claim it using that, but if your laptop is over a year old its not going to work and your out of luck.

 

Don't use it for a few days and let it dry.Then bring to a professional cleaner if you can.

 

I searched on the internet and on the HP site for information about that led that is always on but found no information about it.
Now i dismantled it and I am going to leave it like that for one day to dry.

What are the chances that my HD is also dead? Or my LCD? Right now i am thinking of what it will cost me to repair it.

 

This is why I always tell people to purchase the accidental warranty, because I hear about these horror stories with laptops all the time. It doesn't take much to accidentally break a laptop.

The chances of your HDD being dead and your LCD being dead is slim, unless you spilled a ton, and when I say ton I mean an entire cup of water all into the laptop. If that was the case water could have gone into the HDD, but I highly doubt it. The LCD screen should still be ok, unless you spilled it over the LCD as well. It all depends on where the water went and how much water it was.

 

After about 24h of drying, the notebook booted up normally, i made a backup of all my files and then the system froze. Now the notebook won't boot up, not even to HP logo, and there is no picture. The fan is working.

I was wondering about HP carepack that extends HP warranty for another year. Can I order it now and then when I get, wait for a day or so and return the notebook for repair? Could someone tell if the notebook got in contact with the water (is there a sticker inside like in cell phones?)?

To answer your question. Theres no liquid detecting paper thingy inside, but if the part# stickers got wet, it might smudge.

I dunno, but with my mum's Toshiba laptop, we let it dry for about 24 hours, then got a hairdryer near the vents, and starting blowing inside like crazy. We then let it stand for awhile and it works fine now. There may still be some residue of your drink left?

 

OK, something strange is going on. I noticed that the green light on ethernet port is always on when I plug either the battery or AC adapter. I inserted ethernet cable in the port and voila, it's working now! And when i unplug the cable from the port it keeps on working!

I am not going to turn it on in the next few days and first thing monday morning it's going for repair.

 

I don't know if you'll be able to purchase the accidental warranty right now, but you can always try. If they do allow you to buy the accidental warranty, make sure you send in the laptop without the HDD so they can't tell the last time and date you used it.

 

I believe you get 30days from date of purchase to apply for accidental warranty

Extended warranty on the other hand you can apply for aslong as your original warranty is still on going

 

Good luck on HP repairing it, because if they notice that water was the culprit they'll probably just send it back to you and say the warranty is void.

Also, if you are going to send it in and don't want to lose your data or reinstall your programs, take out your HDD and just send in the laptop. Most of the times you send it in for repair they'll do a factory restore on the machine and you'll lose all your data. Or you could always just make a backup of your data as well.
