    Hi all-

    Im desperate for help!

    Laptop: Compaq 6720S

    Projector: Infocus LP600

Have used this projector for 8 months, with no prob til recently.

When I connect the VGA plug into laptop, POW! off it goes. Totally shuts down.

When I connect with with laptop off, and try to boot up, NO GO! No matter if the projector is on, or off, the lap top is just rejecting the VGA cable being connected it its port.

Im a dufus with understanding this sstuff and would appreciate ANY help. Have to give a presentation tomorrow!!

    Many thanks!

Does the whole system shut off or just the monitor?

On my Lenovo, plugging in the VGA would turn off the laptop monitor. I can change this by pressing fn + one of the function buttons which switches display between the laptop monitor and what's plugged into the vga port.

    Best of luck

Edit: just read your post again and saw that you said it goes entirely off. my mistake.

Thanks for your feedback, Geronimo. The whole dang thing dies. So odd....wont boot up at all if the VGA cable is in its port.

Hmm, sounds like there may be a short-circuit somewhere. To isolate the problem, try a few things:
VGA cable connected to laptop, but not to computer.
Laptop connected to a different VGA monitor (try with this cable AND with another).
Laptop connected to projector with a different VGA cable.

    Thank you Dana.

I used the same VGA cable plug, connecting my projector to my home desktop. It works just fine.

So its not a cable problem. More likely, my laptop.

    any ideas?

    Thank you!

its not the cable, as it works on my desktop. A friend suggested the video card may be the root, ie the motherboard.

    Is a motherboard repair expensive?

Usually yes. You're better off replacing the board entirely rather than getting it fixed, and that's coming from someone who's fixed and modded quite a few mobos.
