My brother is looking to buy a good budget laptop. I have an Employee Purchase discount at HP (I work for Citigroup) and I am configuiring a Presario V3000T for him. I have the following options picked:

    XP Home
    1 GB RAM
    Integrated Graphics (no other option)
    Matte Screen
60 GB Hard Drive- Free Upgrade
    DVD/ CD-R Drive
    6 cell battery
    Standard Finish
    Wireless ABG Card

Now, I have a question about the processor:

    Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo T2250 (1.73 GHz/2MB L2Cache)
    or
    Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T5200(1.60GHz/2MB L2Cache) +$30.00

Would it be better to opt for the more expensive Core 2 Duo even though it has a lower clock speed???

    Thanks,

Well, as far as I know, Core 2 Duo is the second generation of dual cores. It uses a technology that makes your processor more efficient (i forgot what technology) So, yes, it will be a faster processor despite the slower clock time. I think others can be more detailed, they maybe can tell more if it is worth it

    I hope I helped you

From what I know, both these processors are running at 533 FSB not 667. Obviously the Core Duo one has higher clock speed and cheaper, so T2250 1.73GHz would be a better choice in your case.

Core 2 Duo has 64bit capability but I don't think you need this feature.

    Go for the T2250 processor.

The Core 2 Duo is about 10% faster than a similarly clocked Core Duo. It's also a 64 bit CPU.

The clock speed is really not so important nowadays.

So, I would get the Core 2 Duo. It's definitely worth when the difference is only 30$.

Well, with that clock speed difference, the two processors should run nearly identically in terms of speed (the T5200 having the more efficient architecture). The Core 2 Duo is 64-bit, which isn't necessary for most people but at only $30 more, that's what I wold opt for. The battery life should be slightly improved also as the processor runs at a slightly slower clock speed and has improved speed throttling features. You also get virtualization support and some other features that the T2250 doesn't have.

Thanks guys, he decided to go with the Core 2 Duo.
