    Help?!? HP Laptop shuts down when unplugged from the AC?

    My new HP Compaq 6715b will not load up when not plugged into the AC adaptor. It begins to boot up and gets as far as me entering my password, but doesnt go any further? I have to hold down the power button and restart it with the AC adaptor plugged in. Having to open it in safe mode as 'Windows didnt shut down properly'. Sign.

    Also if I unplug the AC adaptor when the laptop is running again after about 30 seconds it shuts down. The power light, wireless light and volume ligths still remain on, as if the laptop has gone into sleep mode. If I plug the AC adaptor back in the laptop still doesnt wake up. It has to be turned off by holding the power button again.

    When the laptop is plugged in and running the laptop tells me that the battery is 98% charged, plugged in, but not charging. But surely if the battery was knackered then it wouldnt be holding any charge?

    Any help appreciated? I really dont want to have to send the laptop back, or spend hours on the phone to a help centre if I can help it?

    Sounds like a bad battery, run the HP test on the battery.

    Those are the same exact symptoms I had

    Thanks for the swift reply. I can't find a HP battery checker that runs on vista? Is there one available? I did try running the XP version, but it just failed to install saying wasn't compatible.

    OK, managed to find the battery checker with HP total care. Once run it says that the battery health is 'good'. When apparently means it is fine? Any other ideas or checks? Thanks

    Also check the control panel to see if for some reason your power options say to turn off the display or something like that when running from the battery. I don't think this is a reason considering the laptop does not "wake up" when you plug it back in, but it is something to check.

    I also think it is a battery issue. Since you have a business model, I would recommend contacting HP support as business support is American based from my experience. They should be able to email you a link with the correct Vista battery checking program for you to try and see what it says.
