Hi, I'm kinda new here and I need some help selecting a suitable replacement for my notebook hard drive which has gone south on me  .
    I'm considering a Toshiba MK1032GAX 100GB 5400RPM 16MB cache.Any ideas as to it's suitability would be appreciated.

The Toshiba should work. Any 2.5" ATA6/100 drive is compatible with the zx5000 series. Be sure to remove the adaptor from the older drive as it is needed for the laptop to recognise the drive.

Also be sure to remove the HD braket with care if you're reusing it - my friend tried upgrading his zv5000's HD and cracked the braket. He had to re-order a new braket and was unable to use his notebook.

    Hey uju32,
I installed a 60GB HITACHI Travelstar E7K100 (see http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16822145097) this past weekend in my pavilion zx5078cl. This drive is a second generation 7200RPM hard drive with 8MB cache, and I think it is truly excellent. Toms Hardware has a great review of this drive (see http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/11/11/fast_and_furious/). There you can read, "With raw transfer rates of up to 54 MB/s, the TravelStar 7K100 is the fastest 2.5" hard drive we've seen yet. When taking a look at the average data transfer speed it is still able to maintain 40 MB/s." Also, "we would... recommend Hitachi's new TravelStar 7K100 for high-performance notebooks." There is a 100 GB drive in this series available if you need that extra space.

You will need to open the compartment on the bottom of your laptop to remove the hard drive tray. This is simple. Then you will need to remove the old drive from the tray by removing four screws. This is simple. Then you will need to remove the small adapter attached to the IDE connector on the old drive. This is not simple. I will admit that I bent two pins on my old drive that needed to be very carefully straightened. Also, you will need a jumper to set your new drive to MASTER or CABLE SELECT mode. My OEM drive from Newegg did not include a miniature jumper, so I used a normal-sized jumper and will replace it with a tiny jumper later.

Put your old drive in a this case from Adaptec (see http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/product/proddetail.html?sess=no&language=English+US&prodkey=ACS-120&cat=%2fTechnology%2fUSB%2fUSB+Hard+Drive+Enclosure). The old drive will be powered when you plug it into one USB 2.0 port and will operate at a quick enough rate to run programs. The construction of this enclosure is great. And Adaptec throws in a nice looking leather case for style.

I hope some of this information helps you with this project. I took out the standard 4200RPM 60 GB HITACHI hard drive that came with my laptop. The change is dramatic.
