Well first, throw out the gateway right off for known build quality issues. I've heard stories about poor support with Toshiba but I think their hardware is generally pretty good. The Toshiba looks like it offers the 8600 GT. The HP 17" pavilion only offers the 8600 gs.. so if you are a gamer the Toshiba may be the way to go. I only get around 2 hours on my dv6500t with hi cap 6 cell. I don't know what kind of battery life the Toshiba gets. I highly recommend getting the 12 cell with the HP that will give you great battery life. I think build quality on the HP's is very good and love mine. Their screens are generally brilliant as well. I would say go with the HP unless you have to have the stronger GPU.. GT card that the Toshiba offers.
Excellent built in altec lansing speakers with great LCD's is why people generally like their HP's. I did buy a Toshiba many years back and had issues with it from the get go. Unfortunately, they did not send a replacement system right away but instead had me send it in.... for MB replacement.. that went on for couple months back and forth until they finally gave me a replacement system. Bad service at toshiba is why I'd stay away from them.
Dell also has great service, not so great hardware and build quality. I feel HP offers pretty good service and build quality and hardware.. So you know what I recommend of course.
Edit.. don't forget that Toshiba looks to have HD DVD option.. don't fall for that one. That of course is a dead format.
