OK, so my dv2000t that I use for school and docked at home now has a blue tint on external monitor.

HP wants $400 to repair, so i have a few options:

    1. Pay $400 and repair
    2. Get a mini-desktop and use the home monitor with mac mini, no external monitor for laptop(Looking at the Mac Mini)
    3. Get a USB-to-VGA or similar (laggy though)
    4. New laptop.

    Please give me some advice!

    Thanks,
    SH

My recommendation would be one of the following-

Buy the replacement part/parts from a reputable third party vendor (for $100-$150) and install them yourself. Don't spend more than the laptop is worth on repairs!

Buy a new laptop, if your budget will allow! (This would be my choice as long as it didn't mean going hungry or skipping a car payment! ;) )

You should check out the HP Business Outlet- LINK. You can get an EliteBook 6930p with discrete graphics for as little as $746 (and $60 more to extend the warranty to 3yrs from 1yr).

Lenovo also has an Outlet with some amazing deals. They have the ThinkPad R400 starting as low as $406- LINK.

Have you tried more than one external monitor, or another computer with that monitor?

If you are connecting with VGA, it could simply be broken monitor cable (twisting the cable would sometimes fix the colors or make then worse).

KLF, it's definitely the laptop graphics output :(

Would you recommend buying a mobo and sticking it in? Is there a NBR guide on buying spare mobos?

First you need to find out model is your current motherboard. Easiest way is probably to remove memory cover & dimms, under those shoulde be a sticker that says "REPLACE WITH xxx-xxxxx-xx" -and those x's are motherboard model number.

Put that model number into ebay: you should find some shops selling new ones.

Alternatively the model number is usually found in the service manual, that I also recommend you to download from HP. Those also have pictured procedures how to dismantle your laptop, with dv2000-series it isn't as simple as some other laptops but still can be done if careful enough.
