I just added an SSD to my dv7t-6100 thereby requiring a clean installation of Win 7. Everything went smoothly except for the fingerprint reader.
I downloaded the drivers and the device seems to be recognized in the device manager. However, it doesn't appear that the driver wizard is completing the installation of the driver/ When I try to install, it starts to run but never finishes up with something telling me it has installed and I need to resart my computer. Then when I download the software, it tells me the reader isn't connected.
I've tried using the device manager to go out and find the driver, but it tells me it can't find it (either on the internet or in my drivers folder). If I try to install the driver, the device manager thinks that the device is working and tells me that there is no newer version of my driver out there.
I have also tried installing the previous version of the driver but get the same problem.
Any help appreciated!

I checked out the link. Since I did a clean install of Win 7 on my SSD I don't have the recovery manager installed. Can/Should I reinstall the recovery manager from my swsetup file I backed up or from my HP Application and Driver recovery DVD?
I took a quick look and the recovery manager didn't jump out at me from those files. If I can get it reinstalled, will I be able to just install the fingerprint reader software without all the other stuff.
Thanks for your help. -
you can't re-install the recovery partition from swsetup. You can restore the OS to the SSD from the recovery disks, which I believe will try to create a recovery partition on the SSD, which you can delete.
but back to your issue -- did you install HP simple pass? its in swsetup/HPSIP11
do you have HP Support Assistant? thats not a bad app, and you can get it from swsetup/HPSF. you can use it to synchronize drivers with HP, and if you find you are alergic to it, it can be un-installed gracefully. -
I just installed simple pass. Seems to be working fine so I Assume that my driver is installed properly. Any good reason I should keep trying to get the other fingerprint software working - does it do anything that simple pass doesn't?

not sure what do you mean by the other fingerprint software? swsetup/drivers/fingerprint is just the Validity (r) fingerprint sensor driver. simple pass is the app that makes is useful.
simplepass is kinda cool but it's not essential -- depending on what you want and your expectations. Currently I'm using it only for system login - so you register as many fingers as you want to be recognized for login. Then when the laptop boots up you swipe your finger instead of typing in a password.
But it can also remember website logins too, so that you can (for example) register your fourth finger on your left hand to log into facebook. then while using the laptop you just swipe that finger and voila you are logged into your facebook account.
I disabled website logins because then every time you log into a website it asks you to register a finger and you can imagine which one you might be tempted to give it.

I think I get it now. The software I was installing from both the drivers thread on this forum and the HP site was a different version than that which was in my swsetup folder. I'm guessing that was the problem. I didn't realize the software was all simple pass since it looked so much different between the versions.
Bottom line, I think I'm all set. Thanks so much! -
great! good luck and welcome to the forums. the DV 61xx is a great laptop!
