Help, Weird Zbook 15 G1 screen problem, lines & patterns

Hello all. I am posting about my old zbook 15 that I gave to my nephew (so please ignore any stupid stuff you see on his desktop, he's only 18 after all).

Quick info because I am sure someone will ask, zbook 15 with FHD IPS screen, non-dreamcolor, Nvidia K2100m, Intel i7 4800, Windows 7 Pro.

So during boot up and up to the logon screen, it's all good (photo 1)

Then shortly after, without any intervention on my part, we get this:



All I have to do is barely touch the screen or flex it and this disappears, but it starts coming back quickly like this (note faint banding on the left side of the screen):



Which quickly progresses to this:



Flexing the screen makes it go away right away, but then it slowly comes back in the same fashion. My nephew said it doesn't usually happen once the laptop fully warms up, but I have seen it occur when he's gaming. Also, pushing on the bezel beneath the screen changes the white balance on the LCD, and I notice what appears to be flickering at the top and bottom of the screen.

Any ideas?

 

If I understand you correctly, the display distorts when you touch it or change the tilt of the hinge then it might be the internal display cable. What I would do is to inspect if both connectors are fixed in their places, one is located on the LCD panel itself and the other is on the motherboard. That would be my starting point.

 

Actually, the lines on the screen appear all by themselves and go away if I flex the screen at all. However the white balance on the screen does change all by itself if I push along the lower screen bezel.

 

Opened up the top cover today and vacuumed a bunch of dust out of the left side hinge and loosened and reseated the display connector on the mainboard. Laptop still does the lines and as soon as I apply ANY pressure on the left side of the screen, the lines vanish. Anyone got any ideas?

 

Replace the screen. You are sure not taking it apart to find the dodgy joint.

 

Sorry guys, I should have updated this. It did get solved, BUT, while I replaced the screen because I already had the new screen on hand, I believe the issue would have been solved completely by reseating the video cable. The previous owner had apparently worked on it, and had secured the connection back together with electrical tape (!).
