I was wondering if anyone could help me determine what is going on with my new AU Optronics B173HW01 v.5 display (1920x1080 FHD). My laptop is the HP Pavilion dv7t-6000 CTO, Product # XW899AV which I bought with a 1600x900 LG LP173WD1 display in it. (Terrible screen by the way imo).

    Symptoms:
    1) The new B173HW01 V5 backlight only turns on when running from battery.
    2) If I plug the AC power in, the backlight turns off immediately.
    3) If I unplug the AC power, the backlight does not turn back on.
    4) Booting from AC the display will not be on for any of the time (not even bios boot)
    5) I have updated my BIOS to the latest one
    6) I have loaded defaults in the BIOS
    7) I have found that the display backlight will light up when on AC power for 1/10th of a second and then never work again until I hibernate and restart from battery

    HWiNFO32 tells me:
Monitor Name: AU Optronics B173HW01 V5
    Monitor Name (Manuf): B173HW1 [DELL P/N: H8D3K]
    Serial Number: Unknown
Date Of Manufacture: Week: 0, Year: 2011
    Monitor Hardware ID: Monitor\AUO159D

The screen is beautiful when I'm running it from batteries. But, is it broken and I need to send it back? Or, did I put a incompatible monitor into my laptop and it just doesn't behave correctly. I need to make that decision within 36 hours from now.

    Thanks for helping baiii,

When I change the brightness up or down and even do the screen toggle between video out and internal, nothing happens. I get the momentary blip of light when I do the video out toggle thing where it eventually rotates back to built-in display.

Another thing I have tried is:
There is a potentiometer on the back of the display where you can turn up or down some configuration. I have taken a photo of the start position and then tried turning it up and down, however nothing happened. It does mess with the timing of the backlight when it is running off of batteries but nothing happens when on AC.

Here is a video of the problem:

It's a video I had to create last night to file a complaint against my vendor on AliExpress.com.

That weird enough, I never experienced such a thing so I can't really help.
It should be compatible as far as I know of, and plenty of people did it before.

I completely agree with you as those are the feelings that I have (it should work, others have done so).

I have found a data sheet on the type of connector used on these monitors http://www.yslcd.com.tw/docs/product/B173HW01 V.4.pdf (for the glossy version of the display and not the matte version). I see that on pages 18 and 19 that pins 31 through 40 are power. I'll check those a little closer but the pins are so small I don't really know what I can do with a volt meter. It would be easy to short two pins together.

Sigh, I'm just upset about this whole experience and then dealing with STORE #513607 at AliExpress has been frustrating. Just to rant for a second:

    1) He listed that he sells the monitor I wanted to purchase (B173HW01 v.5)
    2) When I go to purchase it, he says that the matte version is v.4, not v.5
    3) I tell him "no" that the matte version is v.5
    4) He tells me that they don't sell the v.5 (even though it's listed on the title of his store)
    5) I tell him to cancel my order then
    6) He tells me "wait, I sell to you"
    7) I pay and receive this two year old display that doesn't seem to work.

When you file a dispute through AliExpress some of the comical reasons for disputing are something like:
    - Product is a replica of what was ordered (basically you got a cheap alternative for what you really paid for)
    - Clothing has faded already (within one week of receiving it, your product may have faded?)

Personally, I say to avoid AliExpress at all cost.

Anyone know about shorting some of the power pins together being a bad idea. Of course I believe it's a bad idea but if it operates from battery but not when plugged into AC, maybe something with the power not being correctly applied?

Hey Munk--I also want to switch my DV7t 6000 from 1600 to 1920 ... what tutorials did you use when you swapped yours? Could you please link me to them?

Hi Haints, I followed the video here on youtube.com:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Zs3_GZLwP4E#!

Basically, there is no difference in the connector, screw positions or anything. It just fits right into place. Once you get the new display put in place you can utilize a program such as HWINFO32. It's a free program and once you run it there is a tree view of your computer. Select "Monitor" and then you should see the current hardware display that you have in place.

In my opinion the viewing angle (up and down) of the AU Optronics display is better but not perfect. The higher resolution is awesome but makes reading some things a little more difficult. If you do photo editing or something similar then I believe it is a no brainer as the color saturation, color correctness, high clarity and sharpness is worth it. I just hope that yours goes perfectly unlike mine. I'm still waiting for AliExpress to rule on whether I get to return the display or have to eat it. It's been a horrible experience.

Hey thanks for the detailed response and the link, Munk. Sorry your switch has not gone well and hope someone here can help you figure it out. Do you think it was some small error that you made, or a bad panel or maybe the panel just isn't the right match? Which panel did you use? The b173hw01? That's what I'm hoping to install ...

I'm not thinking it's anything that I have done because there isn't much that can go wrong. My hesitation is if the display isn't 100% compatible with the laptop. But, then I have found one other case where someone else has done this without issue. And, since everything works while running from batteries and not when it's plugged into the charger I'm leaning towards there is something wrong with the display.

B173HW01 v.5 (matte) is the model that I have purchased.

Let us know how your installation goes if you do the procedure.

Hopefully it is just an issue with display and you get a replacement that works fine.

When I took my laptop into my local shop they called their supplier and eventually told me there was no compatible 1080p replacement screen for my Dv7t 6000. Hope they're wrong.

I am going to do the procedure, but with the glossy screen rather than the matte. Wish me luck.

EDIT: Not that this is actually any help, but I did a search and found this ...

I got confirmation from Alibaba express that they ruled in my favor. I can basically ship the display back now and get my money back. The only draw back is that I will need to pay for the shipment back which is kind of understandable. However, if a seller is trying to pull a fast one with a known damaged display then it just isn't fair to pay one cent more than what it is supposed to have been.

I will be ordering another display from a website in the U.S. that has a good return policy and will not be working with AliExpress any longer.

I'll let everyone know if the new display works as I believe it should. But, if the problem happens once again then I owe a big apology to AliExpress and the seller.

I ordered and received my second display from a vendor a few states away. Unfortunately, they sent me an LG brand display instead of the AU Optronics. Geesh. On top of that it was dinged up and had someones name signed on the back. What a mess. Just for the sake of seeing if I could "live with it" I installed it but while the backlight display works perfect in both battery and AC mode there is no actual information showing on the display. I tried it three times along with having my co-worker try it as well. Nothing worked. * sigh *

Anyways, I'm returning that display and getting a different one from somewhere else.

    This seems to never end.

By "actual information" you mean there was no video image at all, right?

Sorry to hear your ordeal continues. You should tell us which vendor sent you the wrong screen.
