Hi all. I just received my DV9220US last night. I only got to play with it briefly but so far I am very impressed and no problems or annoyances to report. It is the retail version of the current DV9000T with C2 Duo, GeForce 7600, Lightscribe and dual 80 GB hard drives. I am sure that Vista is somewhere in my future but my initial impression is that it's awkward and "busy" once you get past the woo factor of the fancy visual affects. I plan on hiding this partition for a later date & doing a clean install of XP Pro. I found all of the drivers at HP site but I don't want to install any unnecessary or redundant drivers so I have few questions

Is the 945GM chipset driver for GMA950 graphics only per the decription or is it required for remaining chipset functions?

    Then we have these:

Intel Chipset Installation Utility for ICH7
Intel Matrix Storage Manager Intel SATA AHCI Controller Driver

    Are they all required?

    TIA

    J

the 945GM as far as I know is for the graphics as it is in the graphics section next to the go7600

the other two are required/recommended one for the motherboard chipset, the other for the SATA drivers for the hard drives.

you should have all of your drivers in the c:swsetup folder. make sure you burn that bad boy to a dvd, it has everything you'll ever need.

Yep, I have the SWsetup folder but I would assume they are vista drivers.

Also, what is Intel Matrix Storage Manager ??

matrix cud be the name of the sata chip used. but whatever the case is, it appears to be required for the sata drivers.

oh yea. crap, sorry i forgot you have vista preinstalled.

I have no idea honestly. 17MB? maybe its some kind of raid utility because you have dual HD's??

You will need the chipset driver, and the sata driver for sure. you might want to look at the great tutorials for installing a fresh copy of xp on these laptops.

    Thade,

I'm planning to do the same (trash Vista and install XP).

When you are done - please report if HP site has all the drivers needed (no unknown devices in device manager or some such)

    Thanks!

I resized my Vista partition to keep it in tact & created a new partition for XP. I had a few minor snafus but I got it all up & running. I still have to figure out how to install the Lightscribe driver....

I installed XP with SATA disabled in the Bios. The required driver for SATA is part of the ICH7 Driver package. I installed it using the setup and then used it to install the sata drivers manually after reboot from device manager, assigning the driver to Primary IDE controller and using "have disk" option. The problem is the driver had multiple options and choosing the wrong driver will result in a blue screen upon reboot. I'm not at the Laptop now but I'll post the correct selection later. I also installed the Matrix thingy... dunno for sure but I believe it's more of a utility and not a driver but who knows it's in there now :) The Intel SATA AHCI Controller Drive is a utility for creating a floppy disk to be used during Windows installation.... I didn't need it.

Most of the other drivers were pretty much straight forward: video, touch pad, lan & wirelles lan, webcam

The sound and modem drivers will not work unless the UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio is installed 1st which I could not find on HP's site or @ MS. After some digging I found it here and after installing I was able to install sound & modem drivers.

UPDATE: Major mistake on my "instructions". I initially reported that I did not use the Intel SATA AHCI Controller driver/utility.... well I did! I didn't realize it until I tried to repeat the reinstall but the drivers within the chipset package do not include AHCI drivers. I did use the utility to create a floppy disk (on another PC) then i copied the driver to hard disk. The time I wasted yesterday trying to follow my own "how to" :(

    Hello Thade,

We just bought the HP Pavilion DV9220US which came with Windows VISTA. I am very interested in getting Windows XP put on it and dumping VISTA for now. I have a few questions.

    1. When I look at the partition and file structure on my computer, I see only one drive physical hard drive, not two separate physical 80 GB units as advertised by some retailers. I saw basically a approx. 140GB primary and an 8-9GB partition which I believe is for the hard drive based system restore for VISTA. What did you see?

    2. Are the HP Pavilion dv9000 CTO Notebook and the DV9220US identical, except for the OS?

    3. Could I order the RESTORE disks for the HP Pavilion dv9000 CTO Notebook on the HP website and use them to install the DV9220US with VISTA to XP? Seems like it would be possible, if the two compters are identical. Please if you or someone could shed some light on this, it would be great. I was just thinking I could use the dv9000 restore set from HP and avoid buying XP and the headaches of installing all the HP downloadable drivers needed.

Any input would be great. Hopefully, you could post the step-by-step on how to go from VISTA to XP and obtaining full functionality on the notebook. Please let me know. Just want XP back so I can play games and use my new HP C6180, which has no VISTA drivers yet. :)

You can use Vistas disk management located in Computer management in administrative tools to resize the Vista partition and create a new partition for XP. You can do all of this while preserving the original Vista install if U choose. After that, set the XP partition as "active" and boot to XP CD (disable sata in bios 1st). Download all drivers from HP site and burn to CD before installing OR you can DL to Vista partition as long as you know how to navigate to it....

I digress :) Install XP, install chipset driver, reboot, install sata driver (I extracted to floppy disk on another PC, then copied to usb drive), enable sata in bios, install remaining drivers= fully functioning. You can even install some of the software apps included if u choose located in the SWsetup dir on the Vista partition (back that up too)

Thanks for the reply and for helping to answer some questions. The SATA drivers, how and where did you get them? They are not part of the HP driver set for the hard drive? Not sure on this driver. Sounds like you had to get it off another identical computer? Also, are you a dual boot system now where you can boot into either XP or Vista? LMK. I may need more help, sorry for all the questions. I used to build desktops with no problem because everything had driver disks and most everything was a deiscrete component. Laptops with all there onboard intergration just make it scary and difficult. Thanks.
