Hello,
I hope that this is not the famous Nvidia chipset issue.
My HP dv9207us laptop has a Nvidia 7600 graphics with 256MB dedicated video memory. It has been running fine until recently when it is giving display problems.
On power-up, it allows me to enter the BIOS.
It goes into the OS booting process, loads the wireless driver (I see the LED near the switch turn blue from orange), then it throws garbage and then blanks. I have no option to press the power button for 4sec to turn it off.
It does allow me to boot into DOS. It does allow me to boot into safe mode with networking too!
It behaves like this on both XP (SP2) and Vista (SP1).
Why could it be doing so? Is it the graphics driver issue? But then it ran well for more than a year.
Could it be some kind of heating issue that it has developed over a period of time? Is this a common issue with this model?
Kindly suggest me on further action. Do let me know if you need any further info.
All the drivers are downloaded from the HP website.
Thanks in advance and regards,
Ravindra.

I do not think it is the nvidia chipest issue we've read so much about. That issue affects integrated nvidia graphics chips. It appears yours has a dedicated (seperate) graphics card.
I would say get the latest drivers for the graphics card and contact hp support. Wish I could have been more helpful.

It affects NVIDIA dedicated GPUs too. You just hear about the NVIDIA chipsets more because there are many more of them.
Check for your computer on the usual list:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c01087277
and even if it's not listed, give HP a call. If you never flashed in the BIOS upgrade that runs the fan 24x7 that increases the likelyhood of a cooked GPU. -
Yes, it looks like you have the dreaded Nvidia failure issue. Instead of calling though, I recommend using the online chat feature since the reps on there are more helpful.

i had a chat with then on Wednesday about my V3000z and they wanted to charge me $298 for repair, but that was until i showed him the link, and he was like "oh, ok, I'll give you a one time free repair as a courtesy.."
anyways if your out of warranty make sure you know about that link and do a bit of research first or they will try to get money out of you. -
Hello,
After three weeks on e-mail, there has been no progress. No case manager has called me back. I plan to call them instead. Is there any particular # that I should call?
Thanks in advance and regards,
Ravindra. -
My computer had the same problem a month or two back. I returned it to them for repairs and they replaced the mainboard (where the gpu is). Got it back and have the same problem basically. I am calling them back on Monday to get it repaired again. It will fail again since the replacement nvidia gpu will be just as flawed.
You should call them and just ask for a UPS box so you can send them your computer. No memory check or harddrive check or system recovery will solve the problem.
I posted a couple vids of my recent troubles on youtube, and I encourage anyone who is having these nvidia problems to make a video record of it and share it on a public site like youtube.
Btw, I don't think anyone mentioned this yet, but I was able to get into my computer by booting in safe mode (jam on the F8 key while booting before the Vista welcome screen). Choose safe mode or safe mode w/ networking if you need internet. I was then able to at least back up my data before I did a system recovery to wipe my hard drive. -
Use the online chat, not e-mail. -
Hello,
Thank you, the on-line chat helped. Initially I was told that the model is not covered under warranty and that Iwould have to pay $298. Then after telling them that I was not in a position to pay anything for repair, they escalated my case to a case manager who called me thesame day and agreed to provide me a free repair.
I asked him to give me a repair as the replacement also would have a faulty chip. He promised me that if anything would go wrong with the repair, he would service it again for free and that giving replacement was not in his powers.
I thought that it was fair enough and agreed for a free mail-in-repair.
Let's see how it goes.
Thanks all of you for your inputs without which all this would have been extremely difficult.
Regards,
Ravindra.
