So basically I tried doing a clean install of Vista Home Premium with my brand new HP DV2500t notebook and didn't run into this forum until afterwards.

So, since i hadn't made a recovery disk for my preinstallation, i ordered the HP recovery disk from HP and just received it. I tried to run it but kept getting the error:

"This PC is not supported by the System Recovery Discs. You will not be able to continue to recover the system with these discs."

    I've tried doing the following:
    1. Ran the disc without formatting.
    2. Ran the disc with a formatted C drive.
    3. Ran the disc with Vista Home Premium installed.
    4. Ran the disc with both drives formatted with no partition made.

With no success. I also looked into the bios and noticed that my service tag is 00000 and not the ID displayed underneath my notebook. Is there anyway i can edit in my service tag somehow? I have a feeling it has something to do with me forgetting to back up my XRM-MS certificate or something. Does anyone have a clue at all?

    Thanks,
    Jon

I don't think the xrm-ms certificate is an issue--there ought to be a certificate on the recovery disk

it sounds more like a) they sent you the wrong recovery disk, or b) the disk cannot determine that you have the correct laptop

Since the recovery disk is an image, rather than a vista installation disk, it needs to load to certain hardware or it will fail.

    Did you change any hardware?

the service tag issue is very peculiar

The only thing i changed with my laptop is upgrading from 1gb to 2gb memory but that shouldn't matter even if it is an image..

OMG. I just got off the phone with HP CS and it was the most frustrating experience ever. I thought Dell was bad.. this was farrrr worse! I told them i had ordered a recover DVD from the HP.com website and said that the dvd states that my notebook is not supported and cannot recover. The lady kept telling me "dont worry the DVD will come" and i kept saying "No, i've already received the DVD and that the DVD is incompatible with my system." Again, she says that isn't an issue.. the dvd will come! At this point i was too frustrated to explain and hung up.

    What to do now...
